Birding

The red-winged blackbirds have returned. My mother is now watching for the robins. As we run errands, we're checking the ponds for the egrets. It's MUCH too soon for them to be back, but we're eager to see them.

I noticed that three of the ponds to the east of us are abnormally high. This is the first year we've had muskrats in those ponds, and today I realized that the water is creeping up the sides of their reed lodges. Since we haven't had an unusual amount of rain in the past month, I wonder if the outflow pipe for the ponds is blocked.

Cop Car:

You count the passing of your seasons by the arrival and departure of egrets; I, by the arrival and departure of scissor-tailed flycatchers. It does seem suspicious that the water is rising, doesn't it? As I write, I hear two things outside my window: a happy house finch in the neighbor's yard, and an earthmover across the street, beyond the pond. Keep it up, little finch. Maybe I can, then, ignore the earthmover.

I don't believe I've ever seen a flycatcher, let alone a scissor-tailed flycatcher. They must be interesting birds! And, to my regret, I don't know what the house finches sound like.

I hope that bulldozer that's been bothering you will disappear SOON! Please tell me that you don't have a subdivision going in!

Cop Car:

Oh, Buffy, a bulldozer is much smaller than this articulated monster! They are putting in the loop of a road that will make our street a through street--along which will be houses, of course. The original plat had our street being extended to join another street across the way (on which Elegant Friend happens to live, so that would have been convenient); but, the platting was changed before we ever bought these lots. They can squeeze in more houses, this way! Unfortunately for our property values, those houses will tend toward smaller, less-expensive ones; but, everyone has to live somewhere, so I won't complain. What I MAY complain about is if the families who move in there have dogs who howl. This street is relatively quiet from the dog standpoint. Before coming here, we had a couple of hounds next door (practically under my bedroom window) who loved to howl all night. Those neighbors thought that I was really cranky (which I was--from sleep deprevation!)

Sue:

I saw three Robins this week and my crocuses started to bloom!Spring is here even though it's still cold.

We have crocus greens, but the forecast is for snow for the coming week, so I doubt we'll be seeing blooms or robins for a while yet.

Cop Car:

About four days ago, I noticed a tulip tree in bloom (it is a type of magnolia that blooms on otherwise bare branches and that you may call something else that is more widely used). Then, I saw a fruit tree in bloom during my walk, yesterday, and noticed that the hackberries and elms are abloom. I think that they are two or three weeks ahead of themselves. Can the redbuds be far behind? (All of the stores have their bedding plants out, now.)

(trying to hide my green from envy)

We have SNOW here....and not much else.
I think the redbud is my favorite Spring tree.....and the serviceberry, and the viburnums.....Oh! I love them all! I envy you getting Spring a month earlier than we do.

I have a forsythia bush outside the office window, next to a star magnolia. I can't wait to see the display they put on!

great blog kicks rear
