In The Weeds

That's what our son, the one who was in food service, used to say when there were just too many customers to care for well.

I'm not in the real weeds, that comes later in the week. Right now, I'm chained to my desk trying to get some office work done. Next week I have the first of two audits, and it's time to be working on tax and union reports, the type of thing that won't wait.

We have a doozy of a storm headed our way. I think the bottom of it might side-swipe us. We're expecting thunderstorms throughout tomorrow, too. That will make weed pulling ever so much easier, so I'm working inside today and tomorrow, and outside on Wednesday.

My youngest sister is one to prioritize, so I'm taking a lesson from her, and trying to fit activities in where they will allow me to get the most done.

Accounts Payable, anyone?

Adele:

When I came across the term "in the weeds" before I didn't understand what it meant. I do now. Thank you. My thoughts are with you on all that office work. Hope it's over soon. Ditto the storm.

Adele, I did a little surfing and came across a wonderful article in Wikipedia called "Diner Lingo." It lists and explains a lot of the verbal shorthand that used to be used in diners. The term I used, "in the weeds" translates to: "A waitress/cook that can't keep up with the tables. Refers back to chefs' military roots, where being in the weeds would cause your army to be slaughtered."

The article is fascinating. You might enjoy reading some of the "Lingo." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diner_Lingo

bod:

you learn something new every day. thankyou buffy.

Did you survive the storm. Heading to check out dingo lingo.

buffy:

Hey, ladies!

It's SO nice of you to check in on me.

Janet, our storm didn't amount to much. Three miles west they had two inches in an hour; we had to brief spells of light rain. We are DESPERATE for rain!

I hope all three of you enjoyed the information on Diner Lingo. Our son was the kind of man who went whole-heartedly into whatever he chose to do. When he made food service his life, he started at the bottom with B****r K**g, and gradually moved his way up until he became a managing partner of an upscale steak house. I don't know where he learned about Diner Lingo on that path, but he used those phrases, and his brothers and sister picked up on it, and then it became part of my language. So now, when I tell someone "I'm in the weeds," I'm reminded of First Son. *S* As Martha would say...."It's a good thing."
