A Tip of the Hat to Joy of Six

Joy, at Joy of Six, was talking about getting relief from her TV addiction with the finales of the past season playing out. I have to admit that over the past 18 months or so, we have watched a LOT more network TV. It all started when I happened to come across Grey's Anatomy when Grey had her hand inside the chest of a man, next to a live piece of ammunition. I was hooked, and we made sure that we were available on Sunday nights to see what happened over the next few months.

Our son introduced us to Boston Legal and it's odd stories. We generally watch Monk, and I tripped over House, M.D. on the same channel. Then, our son, (see a pattern forming here??) encouraged us to watch Heroes. My sister likes the criminal investigation shows, and somehow I started watching CSI and CSI New York. I must be the only person who doesn't like CSI Miami.

I've come to determine what day it is by what program is the feature of the evening. When there's a change in programs, Dear Husband takes over the remote and checks out the guide. He's likely to settle on one of the Turner Classic movies, or science/history shows.

We really need a break. We have become addicted and lazy, and need to be doing more physical things. I wonder if I could schedule one hour a night in the basement through the summer and get the job done?? *G*

Joy lists four different ways she keeps up with shows that she's missed. I have two others that work for me. Many of the networks are now making episodes available for you to watch at your computer. I've seen back episodes of Brothers and Sisters, and other programs.

The other way to see shows that you've missed is to buy the DVD of the season. Usually season one will be available once season two starts. I have Grey's Anatomy Season 1 & 2, Boston Legal Season 1 & 2, Dead Zone Season 1, House M.D. Season 1 & 2, and 24, Season 1.

I've only seen ONE episode of 24, and I'm looking forward to watching the first season. When the summer heat is upon us, I will water my gardens early in the day, and then retire to the cool of my living room and quilt while I watch these shows. If I'm piecing a new quilt, I'll pop a movie, or one of the reruns into the player while I sew.

I watch for sales and order from Amazon when I feel the price is right. I ordered one of the seasons and discovered that the price had dropped significantly on the day it was mailed. I called to talk to them, and they gave me the discount. You can't ask for better service than that.

My name is Buffy, and I'm addicted. I'm going to try to keep this addiction corralled to certain times through the summer, and I promise to get up and do something physical after every show!
Joy, call me if you need an update on any of the shows. (What happened on the Boston Legal finale????)

Adele:

A few of the shows you mention are great favourites with me too. House MD I love - we are currently half way through series 3 at the moment and I try to catch it each week. Having said that I missed last nights episode and the one last week. When the series comes out on DVD I'll definitely get it although his bad temper at the moment as he is coming off the painkillers is making him a little tiresome.

I've been watching Boston Legal on one of the satellite channels available over here from halfway through series 1 and am now well into series 3. I bought series 1 the other day. I was a little taken aback when John said he'd give it a try but he is really enjoying it and laughs outloud at times. I can see us buying series 2 on DVD soon.

The few episodes of Monk I've seen I've enjoyed but it's on at odd times over here and so I usually miss it. The same with Heroes which I really enjoy but keep on missing. The others you mention are on over here but I've never watched them - I try rationing tv at times. One I did like and has now finished its first series was the Dresden Files. The sooner that comes out on DVD the better. Have you any idea whether there will be another series?

I have to admit that I like some tv too. Have you had a chance to catch up on any of our British ones? For example "New Tricks" is wonderful emsemble acting with 3 mature actors playing retired policemen who have come back working under a woman policewoman to solve old cases. Witty and intelligent.

And, of course, there is the ever wonderful Doctor Who. I started watching that when I was about 12 or 13. Since they brought it back it has been so good it has become required watching.

Perhaps I should confess my addiction too.

Joy:

OH MY GOD BUFFY! I think I'm the bigger addict, but it's very close sweetie. The only difference is that MY SON usually busy all the past seasons of the shows and brings them over for us both to watch together...how cruel is that. How can I say NO to him. Plus...he and I have very similar tastes as to what we like. I don't see this situation changing anytime too soon....CRAP!

24...oh sweetie, I can only send you my love and support....talk about getting hooked on something. I think it's the worst. I'm here for you!

God forbid I should miss an episode of Boston Legal. I've been taping them along with watching them. WHY? I don't know... I love James Spader and Shatner; but I couldn't live long enough to watch everything I've taped. I finally just stopped taping the last few episodes. Do you really want to know what happened in the finale? I'll e-mail you.

The CSI trio....Just when I thought I was out....they pull me back in...just yesterday too....thanks Joe. We watched 4 episodes (you heard me) of CSI Miami, Season 4...and we've got another 4 lined up on his next days off. David Caruso is SOOO dramatic, but we still watch...chuckling all the way.

The guilt sets in exactly where you say....no exercise. I actually have to get up every so often and change the pace. Where do I usually go....to my computer. I should go take a walk or go on my bike. I know just what you're talking about.

I wish you luck this summer sweetie...but somehow I think you're much better adjusted about this addiciton than I am. Remember...you know where to find me. Thanks Buffy...

Holy crackamoly I knew there was away around missing life for tv sitcoms. lol DVD's!

I've seen one episode of Grey's Anatomy. We watch the original CSI, but CSI Miami I wouldn't watch if you paid me (the other one, if I was paid, I might watch). We watch 24, but the last season wasn't all that good (we finally finished watching the final from two weeks ago last night). We haven't seen the rest of the shows you mentioned. Actually, the only other show we watch is Battlestar Gallactica.

Other than that, we watch the odd race or two (NASCAR) if it is on at night (actually, we watch the last 10-20 laps), I tape the big 3 horse races, we watch PBR at times, Sunday Night football, and some History Channel.

buffy:

Your name is Adele and you are addicted.....

Adele...it cracks me up that you get to watch the same shows WE watch. I don't have a clue about the Dresden Files, but I'll try to keep an eye out for info, and for the shows. If you like it, I'm bound to like it, too.

Who have thought JOHN would enjoy Boston Legal! That's incredible!

We watch Dr. Who, too (Sounds like a Dr. Seuss rhyme....) The kids introduced me to it darned near a quarter of a century ago, and let us know about the new seasons the past couple of years.

"New Tricks" sounds great. I'll have to see if it plays here. Thanks for the tip.

buffy:

OH, my word, Joy....how could you say no to your son!?? lol I guess you just get to share that addiction!

I sit through FOUR, and tell myself that it wasn't four HOURS because there's no commercials, but it's still close to THREE HOURS! Don't your hips hurt when you get up? It's like taking a long car trip with no breaks. *S*

Just a thought.....maybe we ought to buy stationary bikes to ride as we dole out the episodes....

YES....e-mail me with what happened in the BL finale!

buffy:

Janet, my sweet.....we can get YOU addicted, TOO! And you can watch the shows over and over and OVER! Here you thought life in those gorgeous Rockies of your was gonna protect you from wasting your time like this.

Muuuahahahahahahah!

buffy:

Bogie, I can't get past David Caruso on CSI Miami, but I really like Gary Sinease on CSI NY, and the original cast has started to grow on me, so I've started watching them in their re-run season

We watch very little sports on our side of the house. Elegante Mother is likely to have the horse races, car races, and football playing. I like basketball when the Bulls seems to be winning. *G*

I'll keep your opinion of this season of 24 in mind as I consider other DVD purchases.

We're old enough to have watched the first version of Battlestar Galactica, and I've had difficulty adjusting to this one. We don't make it a point to watch. The show I miss is Farscape!
