GASP!! What do you mean, I can't get to the Internet!!??
Sometime late on Thursday, our connection to the Internet was lost. I was too busy Friday to realize it was down, and groaned on Saturday morning when I realized we couldn't connect. I was sure that they wouldn't send a repairman until Tuesday at the earliest, because of the holiday weekend.
I resigned myself to a long wait, so I was very surprised when they offered an appointment on Monday. SURE, I'll be here! They called back to ask if someone could come on Saturday.....it was Saturday when they called. SURE! I'll be here. Unfortunately, the repairman didn't keep the Saturday appointment. I was rather ticked, because we had planned to go out to dinner, and the appointment was to have been by 6:15. We waited, thinking he was just running a little late.
I called the company after 8:00 p.m. and they said the appointment was still open. By then, I didn't want a repairman in my home. We rescheduled for Sunday afternoon. I tried all the common tips to get the modem to work. You turn the computer off, and unplug the modem, plug it back in, and it usually works. I knew it was getting power because the computer worked. Finally Second Son came down and looked around. He discovered a re-set button on the back of the modem, and tried it.
It worked.
I went without an Internet connection for close to three days because I didn't know there was a re-set button. (You can imagine me fuming here....)
I'm so very glad to be back. I think I'll spend a little time catching up with your lives.

Wouldn't you think they'd do that BEFORE they schedule someone to drive to your house to see what's wrong??? I was astonished that it was that easy to fix. I thought our modem had died.

How frustrating is that? A reset button? This is exactly why I pray to be more tech saavy.

It seems there is a reset button on just about everythig these days - you just need to know where it is and what it looks like. Some reset buttons are just small holes in the devise in which you stick the end of a paper clip into. Whop in their right mind would think to look for something like that?

Joy, I think we're at the same place in our technical development. Far enough into it to be hooked, but not savvy enough to save ourselves when something goes awry.

Bogie, I'm sitting here looking at three of those tiny holes on the face of my computer tower. I KNOW how to use them when the DVDS or CDS get stuck and nothing else will work. I can't belive that I didn't carry that knowledge over to the modem! Maybe this is a lesson I'll remember. (We can only hope!)

Just returned to Westcliffe from denver and guess what my internet connection didn't work! Call ISP and they said everything looked ok on their end and I should call linksys, which I did. Talked to a real nice guy from India which I couldn't understand until he repeated everything a couple times. Repeatedly asked him to slow down.. Well turns out a dns number was missing in set up, found that out after calling ISP back. Funny when I asked for DNS information she put me on hold and all of a sudden my connection started working. I'm stressed.
My point to all this, even when you sorta know what to do something different will happened to keep you confused! Oh at least in my case.

Buffy,
Have you had more problems since you posted this? It's just that after seeing your posts on my Google Reader (yes, I've finally got an RSS feed) I wasn't able to get your blog up at all - every other web address Yes, but not yours. Now is the first time I've managed to access it for at least 2 days.
I have no idea whether I have a reset button on my modem. But then the helpdesk for my ISP isn't very good and I've discovered my own ways of getting the thing to work, including a straightforward removing the power cable and replacing it and jiggling my phone receiver. Well, it works for me (grin).

Good God! DNS numbers and RSS feeds...I have NO IDEA what you ladies are talking about. I'm SO glad that I have stepsons who are comfortable with current technology, or I'd be up a creek without a paddle!
Janet, I'm glad you're back in business. Frustrating, isn't it, to have to straighten out these things.
Adele, perhaps RedEagle1 was working on the domain or our blogs. I'm glad that you can get through now. We do that same little series of things: unplugging, waiting 30 seconds, replugging, starting the computer. Occasionally we turn off all the power, and then we have to repeat that series with a router, too. Most times, that will get us back online. Now, I'll try the reset button, too!
