Don't you just love being a homeowner?
We've known for a year or so that we needed to re-shingle the roof. I can't tell you why we stalled, but we are well past the time when it HAS to be done. The weather was so hot this year that the shingles have deteriorated, and it's not safe to be on the roof now.
We have three of the four proposals in our hands. As soon as we choose our roofer, I have to go to the city to get a permit to re-roof, and then we'll start the work as soon as they can.
I know that my gardens along the front sidewalk are going to take a hit. I plan to cut back the ornamental grass before they start stripping the roof. I expect them to protect about half the plants in the garden. I'll move all the containers out of the way, but some things simply have to be protected. In their favor, it seems that they are prepared to work with me.
While we've been getting ready for the roof, we've had several other things need attention. We have a new hot water heater, and the condenser for the air conditioner has been fixed so that it drains properly. The plumber is bringing a new fan motor for the air conditioner tomorrow, and we'll be able to see if the unit works. I think we have to have a new motor put into the attic fan, too.
Let's see.....the drier needed a new coil, and the car had to have new brakes, front and back. The worst thing about doing all these repairs at one time, is that they probably will all have to be done again at the same time.
Even though maintaining things is a pain, I'd still rather have my own home.

Uh huh, I'm on the same page with you, Joe! I think it's bed time, too. Sleep well.

As much as we needed our new roof, as much as I'm glad we have a new roof, after paying the bill, I felt cheated because I can't stand in my kitchen window or any other window in my house and admire my new roof.

Isn't that the TRUTH, Roberta?? It's such a major expenditure, you want to be able to enjoy it, but the only way to do it is to camp outside.
Things will be odd for a while. We'll get used to the new roof during the winter, and then I'll have to redo the landscaping across the front of the house. We'll be removing the raccoon's access, a gorgeous viburnum, and replacing it with something shorter. We'll have a lot of changes to adjust to this year.

Cool colors!
Well, you could live in Tornado Alley, Texas, where you are guaranteed to replace roofs every 5 years or less due to hail storms.
Home ownership is wonderful...till something major goes wrong. My household is never prepared.

I'm glad I don't have to do this every five years, Pattie. I helped Dear Husband install the roof sixteen years ago. I said I wouldn't be going up on the roof again. I thought we wouldn't have to redo the roof for another 9 years or so. We get tornadoes, but not as frequently as Tornado Alley, thank goodness!
I'm glad you like the colorS!

I know how you feel between the basement wall leakage fix needed, replacing windows and waiting for washer parts - ownership is a pain. But, like you, I'd rather own (and unlike you, none of my gardens should be in jeapardy.

At least the damage to the gardens is coming at the very end of the season. I can cut back any of the perennials that might take a hit, and cover them with 5 gallon buckets, or just nag the guys to set up something to cover the most important ones.
I knew you'd understand all the renovation. *S*
