I bought a summer weight red hat this week. The stores in this area were all having sales to make room for the fall clothing that's already coming in, so I got quite a bargain. I never though about it, but I have a seasonal wardrobe of hats.
I have stocking caps and berets, and scarves for winter, and hats to shade my face and neck as I garden, but this is the first time I have purchased a RED hat. It has a cute little straw "flower" made of the same material as the body of the hat. I think this is the first time I've ever purchased a designer brand hat! I'll fit right in with my Red Hat friends!
I was astonished to see that Fall clothing is already moving onto the racks. I JUST switched over to my summer wardrobe on June 1st, after a cool Spring, and I was starting to think about what I needed to get for this season.
I HATE being rushed by the stores. Of course, they wanted me to buy my summer clothing in December, when I was trying to organize our holiday celebrations. It's ridiculous that our purchases have to be made so far ahead of the appropriate season. I wanted to make a new wreath for Thanksgiving two years ago, and walked into our local craft store. They were selling Valentine things.
I get magazines that are dated months or seasons ahead of the actual date. We buy next year's cars the summer before they should come out. I wouldn't be surprised to find that McAfee 2007 is available now.
This is all making me crotchety. Maybe if I hold off for a few years, I'll be in the right season to make my purchases, just a year late.

I am very envious. I wish I could wear hats, as I think that they add an air of distinction to a person, but on me they just look ridiculous. I just do not suit a hat at all. But then I can never find clothes to suit me either, given my weight and body shape -sigh-.
I agree with you totally about shops selling items for the following season because that happens over here too. Infuriating. Especially as over here it is well over 82 degrees and a humid as the other place. Magazines and TV programmes are like that too. If you buy a gardening magazine, or watch a tv programme about gardening you know very well that the pictures you are looking at were likely to have been taken last year and so you are looking at a flower bed, etc which is anything up to a year out of date.

Red hats - what could be nicer. I love hats and a red one is got to be totally awesome. As for your other comments, Buffy, about that ahead-of-season shopping, it irks me too. I need a pair of sandals for a school reunion in July. Last week I looked for a pair but didn't find any I like. I probably won't get back to the shoe shop until the middle of July and I expect by then I'll have no choice but to buy Sorel winter boots instead of sandals.

That's one of the reasons (sales being so far ahead of season) for most of my life I've waited for the "after-4th-of-July" and "after-Christmas" sales. It saved a lot of money and couldn't care a fig that I was a year behind fashion.
Somehow, I can't see myself in a hat. If anything is on my head, it is a tennis-type visor or a hood from a sweatshirt or windbreaker. I don't do scarves, hats, or umbrellas. Your Elegant Mother certainly looked at home and regal in her red hat that day, though, and I can picture you in a good looking addition at the top. More power to you!

Adele, I had always thought of that "other place" as being hot and dry, but what could be worse than having to deal with high humidity?? It's supposed to get to the upper NINETIES today (fanning myself at the thought). And wouldn't you know....we have to go out. (sigh)
About the gardening magazines, I've just looked at it as pre-planning, since our gardens DO take a lot of planning. But, it's odd to see someone's Spring garden when mine is still under snow, so I get your drift.
Roberta, the same thing happens to me. I needed sandals for a trip last summer, and I'm SURE my choices were limited because I shopped in mid-summer. Thankfully, I already had Sorels! lol
Cop Car, you would be amazed at the variety of hats these ladies wear! I wore a red baseball cap to my first meeting....sideways, because I didn't have a red hat. We see really elegant broad brimmed creations and we see bucket hats, and everything in between. I think you'd find one that would make do, so you could participate, and that's really what's important.
I have a huge wardrobe of scarves, and do you know, not ONE of them looks right on me! I used to wear them all the time when I was in my 20s, but I seem to have lost the touch (and maybe the weight...) I have designer scarves and Target scarves, and huge squares that can be folded over your shoulder and secured with a belt, yellow nubby long thin scarves, and silk scarves....and not one of them feels right to me now. Bummer.

Buffy, I had a wry smile at your coment that gardens need planning. I certainly agree - in principle. However, the fact is that when I go to a nursery or garden centre I impulse buy plants I like the look of. And then when I get home I have to find a place for it.
I may not wear red hats, but I wear a lot of red. It is odd how many of my clothes are red or very bright colours. I also have a lot of scarves, collected over the years. Id like to wear them more often but I can never find a way of wearing them that looks fashionable. With long scarves I tend to end up looking like Tom Baker and with square ones loooking like a Russian woman. - grin_

I bet you were adorable in it, Joe, and I bet your mum was ticked that you lost it!
