I SO wish I could make the world right.
We have a friend who is having so much trouble getting a job that he is close to being homeless.
The beheading of Nicholas Berg has shocked me to the core.
Our unstable economy refuses to settle and grow, and it's impact is horribly widespread.
A number of diseases, like tuberculosis, have returned with vigor, and are resisting our attempts to eradicate them.
And the list goes on and on.
What can I do as one person to make the world better? Keeping myself off the lists of the needy isn't enough. Beyond making contributions, and saying my prayers........what can I do?

Inspire people through your positive interactions with them is all you can do. Some of your spirit will rub off on them, hopefully. If enough of us do it, it *will* make a difference. Eventually.

That should be prefaced with "Continue to"...

Buffy--I agree with BW in her "Continue to...." By caring for your mother as you do (even though you enjoy having her with you!) you are helping. By providing a sane window on the world to those of us in e-land, you are helping. By providing the glue to your extended families, you are helping. And, certainly, by contributing to causes, you are helping. By voting intelligently, you are helping. Take care of yourself so that you will have the health/strength/finances to continue to help in these ways. Hopefully, there will be time for other projects at a later point in your life.

You, as one person, can make a difference to one other person. And one other. And one other.
And they, in turn, can go on and make a difference to someone else.
That matters SO much.

Buffy... it is all too much for one person, but we can each try to do good and care for those around us. I have no doubt that you already ARE making a difference.

The Nicholas Berg thing is beyond despicable... I don't even know what to say.

Thank you all for such uplifting comments. Usually I deal reasonably well with the world around me, but it just seemed overwhelming for a bit.
I like the idea of one person influencing another, who influences another. And I believe that our efforts need to beging at home. If we don't take care of our families, how can we take care of the world?
Thanks, everyone, for lifting my spirits!
