Up and running

Well......I re-programed our business computer. With about an hour's help from Dell, and a couple of hours of guidance from Stepson Number 3, I got almost all of it back on and running. Most of it agrees to work as it did before, but I need to do a little tweaking.

T told me that the wonderful little calendar in the bottom right corner of my screen that just appeared one day was a a gift from "Gator," and that I didn't want to let them anywhere near my computer again. We also managed to loose "Gain" in the process, and I'm happy to have kicked them out. We're going to add a spywear program this coming week.

Now I'm trying different pop up killers. I'm being inundated with ads from companies who want to SELL me a pop up killer.......like I'd buy anything from them after they've driven me crazy! Huh!

So, the experience was not as difficult as I thought it would be. I still need guidance in setting up drivers, but the rest of the reprogramming was pretty easy. Perhaps some of my friends have rubbed off on me over the past four years!

I'm a confirmed believer in back ups, though. I managed to save all but one program, and it was time to update that information anyway. Regular backups can save you, yeah they can. Memorize this....and live by it: Save Early And Often!

I've been using Ad-aware 6.0 for a pop up stopper..it's free and seems to work well.

Ad-aware and Spybot Search and Destroy work very well. PC World suggests using both as neither does a complete job. Worth double checking though with as fast as technology changes. I like Spybot though.
As far as "Save Early and Often", you can do that without making funny hand signs like Spock.

...I use a free zone alarm firewall...but I have nothing much to say...I just want to see if me comment comes up twice :^)...

John Anderson, RI USA:

Check out http://myie2.com/ as well. It includes a pop-up/pop-under killer, filtering of other sites (it comes with a list that stops regular ads from some annoying sites: add or remove at leisure) - but its big thing is that it "front-ends" Internet Explorer, allowing several sites to be open while taking only one task-bar space: I finally allowed it, as my browser, to use the whole screen - always left the task-bar visible before!

Dawn, and WichiDude, I think those are the programs my step son wishes to install. I've been trying "History Kill," but for some reason the pop ups just laugh at it's version of a pop-up killer, and the rest of that program is more than I need.

John....I know that I just wrote that I reprogramed my hard drive, but your comments verging on the technical gave me the willies! *G* I suspect they would make total sense to my kids, so I'll make sure they see what you had to say.

I have the google toolbar, it has a built in popup blocker *s*
