Alas and alack....
Dell has replaced our hard drive, but I didn't realize that we didn't have a copy of our Operating System until 5:00 Wednesday afternoon. If I had been on the ball, I'd have ordered the new O/S on Monday, and I could have been programing the computer today.
This morning (Thursday), Dell sold me a copy of Windows 2000, Service pack 2, and arranged for it to be delivered on Friday. (I couldn't order it last night because Dell's sales staff is not available 24 hours a day.) We paid less, even with delivery, than we would have paid at CompUSA, which is one of the few good things about this situation. Frankly, I think Dell failed to pack the original O/S, because we have every other disk from that set, and we have never had to re-program the computer. I bet the tech forgot to pack it up and send it on.
I was particularly irritated that the tech who swapped the hard drive did not make ANY effort to see if the hard drive was working, or if our information could be saved. He packed up the drive, WITH ALL OUR INFORMATION ON IT, and walked away. On top of that, I let him get away from me without getting his business card. I wanted to throttle the little twerp! I doubt that our business information is of much use to anyone else, but I hate that it's out of our control.
As soon as the disk arrives tomorrow, I'll begin reprograming our computer. I want to get as much done as possible before Dell's staff leave for the holiday weekend. As I understand it, they will be running with a skeleton crew when I need them the most.
T...thank you for the offer of help. I'll keep you in mind. My stepson has volunteered to help should I need him. Fred is keeping rather quiet about the fact that he is going to go sailing and leave me to cope with this on my own. After all....this is associated with paperwork, so it's not his job.
I'll be really happy when we get to the other side, and I can tell you that all is well and that Trixie is running again.

They should have been able to look up the reg and ser. #'s of the OS they were supposed to have sent to you and allowed for a copy to be sent out. After all, IT was part of the software package they sold to you. My guess is the disk was sold after market,(out the back door), after you received your system. This happened to a friend, he had the necessary numbers and when he needed to reload his OS, he talked to MS for a download,(being able to prove he indeed was the owner of the software). They told him it was registered to someone else Go figure.
Stinks that the louse walked out with your business info and left no card. Very unprofessional.

W'Dude...I'm SURE you are right. About the tech, it was my own darned fault that I didn't get his card. I may either call and ask to have his card sent to me, or I'll call Dell to complain.
Mad Bull....coming to visit YOU would be an adventure....reprograming a computer is PURGATORY! *G*
Thanks for offering Speedbump, Jamie. That was sweet. (Did you ask him first???)
Billy, there's a whole lot of words we're learning not to use around our English friends. I can just see you setting me up and then one of them clapping his hand over my mouth in horror! Ya know....I miss about every third word you write. Behave yourself or there'll be no snogging for YOU when we meet! *G*
Doc...usually I can understand YOU! I'll have to visit your blog before I'm chained to the computer later today. *S*
