Creating Links

Okay, this is going to display to everyone my total ignorance of all things computer, but what the heck!
My sister, Nan, at Just My Opinion, would like to learn how to embed pictures in her blog, and how to create links. I’m going to try to explain how to create a link, and if any of you have suggestions on ways to improve this tutorial, please share them with us in the comments.
1. In your blog, highlight the blog or text that you want to link.
2. Open a second window and go to the blog or text that you want to link.
3. At the top of the screen, in the Internet Explorer section, copy the address of the blog/text.
4. Go back to your blog, make sure the highlight is still in place, and click on the small box at the right top corner of the Entry Body that has the letters “URL.”
5. A box will open with a place for an address. Click on the address line, and then right click and select “Copy.” Click on OK.
6. The link is done. You can check to see if it’s working by going to “Preview.”
Any corrections or suggestions?? Oh, Nan, I usually save my entry in Draft mode first, and then go back to do the links before I publish. I forgot that today and had to go back to retype the entire entry. 🙁 And, you can highlight the address on the text and THEN highlight what you want to link….it works both ways.
Happy linking, sis!

  1. Hurrah! Sounds right. Our visual layout for posting is a little different, using TypePad; but, the sense is the same. (Next you’ll be teaching her to post pictures or link to files!) You teachers never quit, eh? ; )

  2. Yes….That’s the next step. I thought I’d start with something simple, though. Thanks, Cop Car, for weighing in.

  3. Well okay, ummmm, if she uses moveable type……….well it is easier in my humble opionion!!!
    1. copy your link before begining your post. *I find that easier, if not use two screens*
    2. start your blog entry and where you want to insert, type check this out, the blog name, etc whatever fits….
    3. click on url at the top of your box on your blog back space all the stuff in there….then right click your mouse and find paste, click and hit okay.
    4. keep working on your post and wallah…..
Okay it is pretty much the same thing you said I guess I should have kept reading…….but it is late, I’ve been out tonight, and well I’m blonde LOL
There is also the backtrack issue, which I’m not very good at, but it is also another good way to link up!

  4. Were you out dancing without me???!!
Yes….the backtrack issue… Ya know, I think I’m going to assign that tutorial to ~T~ Don’t ya think she’d do a great job?? (Whimping out, since I’ve forgotten how to do it…)

  5. I could also explain how to “hand code” the link in there, since I use firefox and the buttons at the top of the entry box are not there 😉
but I’m not going to start trying to confuse you now!
(and yes Jamie, she uses MT, because she’s hosted on this site, same as you, same as buffy…et all…LOL)
now, trackback…there are 2 ways to do it
first way is doing just like you explained up there, (linking to someone in your post) but linking to the individual entry on whoever’s blog you’re trackbacking, MT will automatically do the rest, and trackback the entry you linked.
the second way is to find the ‘trackback url’ some have it in a second trackback window, some have it in their comments (example: The URI to TrackBack this entry is:…) copy and paste that into the box right above the preview and save buttons at the bottom (URL’s to ping) before you save your entry…and again, MT will do the rest!
any questions…you know how to find me LOL

  6. Okay, ~T~, I’m clear on how to do it, but I’m not sure just what it is that I’m doing. When I create a link in the body of my message, it’s so that my reader can find something I’m making reference to. When I trackback, is that to link to other blogs so that their owner or readers can see what we are saying in relation to the subject on that blog?
I’ve seen people leave comments, saying that the subject resonated with them so much that they were going to respond in their own blog, rather than fill up the comments area. Could they have just created a trackback, or is it more polite to let the writer know you’re inspired enough to write on the same subject?

  7. Blimey… if I didn’t know how to do links I might be scared now!
I too use MT, but find it much easier and quicker to hand code the links…
ie [a href=”the URL of whatever you want to link to”]the text that you want to appear as the link to click[/a].
To get the link to open in a new page, add: target=”_blank” in to the code.
eg the code to link to my blog, using the words ‘Blue Witch’ as the text to click on, and get the link to open in a new page would be:
    [a target=”_blank” href=”http://blue-witch.co.uk”]Blue Witch[/a]
(NB replace square brackets [ and ] with pointy witches’ hats – have to do that or the system will try to use the witchy hats as code)

  8. Blue Witch….I totally understood your last two comments, but I’m going to hve to copy the first one and take it with me to a quiet place to ponder it. You and ~T~ are way too far ahead of me in computing for us to be able to talk about these things, I think. I need the “Trackbacks for Dummies” version.

  9. Buffy
if you link to the individual entry, MT will automatically create a trackback if it is enabled on the blog you’re linking to.
it benefits both that way 😉
BlueWitch, I hand code mine too…which is why I left their way of doing it alone LOL

  10. ~T~….will MT create a trackback if the blog I’m linking to is not on MT??
And….I’m not sure I understand your comment to Blue Witch. Did you not comment on how to do a link because you do it differently?

  11. no, I do it the same way she does…but I’m not going to confuse you by posting that here…I’ll email you the code if you’d like to learn it though (MT won’t let me put it in comments, which is why she used the different bracket)
if trackback is enabled, then yes, it will create one, but if not (like ours are not) then it won’t.
