Fall Is Coming

I know that Bogie doesn't want to hear about this, but the signs are beginning to mount in the Chicago area........Fall is coming.

1 The goldfinches are eating the seeds from the heads of the purple coneflowers.

2. The bean fields are beginning to show some yellow areas. (A good time to do a little aerial photography.!

3. School is IN!

4. The cat keeps bringing in burrs on his fur.

5. Young maple trees have started to change color

6. The Thyme and Basil plants are flowering.

7. We've bought our first chrysanthemums for the year.

8. and I've felt the crisp air of Fall one day two weeks ago....a harbinger of the cool air to come!

I'm not pushing to get to winter, but these are all things we've seen at Casa Buffy. I don't do well in the heat, despite the fact that I love the growing season. Spring and Fall are more comfortable times of year for me. Besides.....like Bogie, I'm tired of watering the plants!

bod:

not to mention the nights are beginning to draw in.
i love autumn too, it's usually still very sunny and mild but you get the added beauty of the colour change with all the leaves.

Joy:

Yep, I think you're right Buffy...it's coming....and I can't wait! I love those crisp, clear days.

Our stuff is just feeling the effects on dryness. The basil and thyme have been flowering for well over a month, and even established maples are turning (they have shllow roots).

Weather has been pretty much the same as all summer, 50s and 60s for 3-4 days, then 80s and 90's for 3-4 days. Repeat, repeat, repeat (well, you get the idea)

Bod, I LOVE the color change.....the oranges and reds and browns and yellows (looking over at the Lone Star design background....) The only sad thing is that it signals the end of the growing season. We've been enjoying the cooler nights and early mornings, and so have my plants! *S*

Joy, I KNEW that you would understand. Chicago weather seems to have a life of its own, but we can usually count on a great Fall. I'll be enjoying it right along with you!

Bogie, that repeat stuff seems to have happened here this summer, with a longer repeat. We had a wonderful Spring, then we had NO rain each month until the last few days of the month. We got enough precipitation on those days to make it look like we had the average or MORE in rainfall, but the plants were grabbing their throats and making choking sounds. I'm interested to see how the corn and bean harvest turns out.

Are you in USDA Zone 4 for cold?

It depends on which map you use whether I'm in 5 or 4. But I say yes since I have problems keeping a lot of zone 5 plants alive (so I'm not sure why I think I can keep roses alive this winter!).
