Birds in the Air

No, this isn't a bird-watching entry. One of my quilting magazines came last month, and one of the patterns called out to me. It's basically a "Birds in the Air" block, with a variety of red fabrics used in the unpieced half of the square. I already had the fabric in my stash to make it, so I started cutting right away. This quilt will be roughly 60" x 60." It takes 64 blocks. Since I've chosen to make it with a scrappy look, I have more than enough pieces already cut out to make more blocks. It would be easy to expand the quilt and make it full size.

This is what the basic block looks like:

I have about half the blocks pieced. This is what the quilt will look like as I assemble it:

I don't too often jump into a quilt like this when I have others ready to go. Actually, I have TWO others ready to piece. I wanted to combine a group of Christmas themed fabrics with some of the "woodsy" fabrics I brought home from Alaska. I thought this might make the kind of quilt I'd like to have on the back of the couch at Christmas. Can't you see drawing a cover up over you while you read on a snowy day?

I love using my digital camera to take pictures of blocks. As I looked over some of the pictures I took today, I realized that two of the darker "neutral" fabrics were just a bit too dark for this quilt. It's a wonderful tool to determine value in quilts.

I don't have a name for this quilt yet. The designer called hers "Red Sky At Night," but I don't want Dear Husband to get any ideas about appropriating it for the boat!

nice buffy, you are a talented lady.

Joy:

Oh.....I just love your work. I could look at these beautiful quilts all day....and have when I go to fairs and shops with handmade things like this. This quilt is just gorgeous Buffy. You really do create some of the most beautiful work I've seen.

Angie:

I love your BITA!! Gorgeous colors, and I totally understand about the hubby possibly confiscating it for the boat. We just bought a pontoon this summer, and mine is already talking about needing a quilt for on it. :D I would love snuggling under the one you're making on a snowy day with piles of quilts book around to peruse, and a novel or two to dive into, and some hot tea or cocoa on the side table, and...... ROFL I love it!

Bod, thanks! Do ya think we should wait to see how this turns out??? *G*

Angie, thanks for visiting! I've never made a BITA quilt before, but I saw a picture of one, and realized I had all the fabric I needed in my stash. I just couldn't resist. I've combined some fabric from a trip to Alaska that has moose and bear, and pine trees, with a line of Christmas fabrics that seemed to blend well. I changed the light background to shades of tan or ecru. I'll make a few extra blocks so that I can play around with the layout, and leave out anything I don't like.

I'll buy Dear Husband one of those silver survival covers, but I won't let him take one of my quilts to the boat. Instant Mildew! There's no point in wasting all that work.

I can see that we're on the same wavelength about how a quilt should be used! It must be why the two of us have become quilt makers!

Joy, I'm so glad you like my quilts. I'm not an art quilter, but I enjoy working with the fabrics that are out there today, and using traditional patterns. I get into a fabric shop and want one of everything! Wait until you see the next quilt I'm working on! It's all in blues and greens, and I've managed to mix batiks in with regular cottons. I can't wait to get started!

I so envy your ability to put together a quilt! This one is going to be beautiful (and don't you dare let your husband take it to the boat! lol). I had never thought of using the camera lens to help decide on colors. That's a great idea! Good luck with that (don't start another until you finish one of the other two!).
