Planting Today

3 Homestead Purple Verbena
4 dark ruby petunias
1/2 a packet of Rose Queen Cleome seeds
1 purple calibracoa
6 sweet basil
1 purple ruffles basil
2 curly leaved parsleys
2 flat leaved Italian parsleys
2 upright rosemaries
1 tricolor sage
1 cilantro
4 lemon verbena
1 large fever few

As usual, I have loads left to plant, including tomato plants. May 15th is the last frost date for this area (Zone 5, Chicago suburbs), so I could have planted them today, but I held off for two days to let a storm system go through. It seems that all around us are getting rain, but we've just had a sprinkle or two.

I need to have Elegante Mother choose more pots to plant. As usual, she bought more plants than needed. Perhaps I can send a planted container to one of my sisters, when EM goes to visit at the end of the month.

I still need to find a Bridal Wreath shrub (spirea), annual purple fountain grass, Goldsturm rudbekia, Victoria Blue salvia, Bluebeard shrubs/perennials, and more Russian sage. I haven't planned what I want to add to the little garden across the driveway, yet. And, I'm waiting for Dear Husband to move the dingy so that I can plant the south raised box of the veggie bed.

Ya know....I'm glad I live where the snow flies part of the year. I don't think I could keep this up year round!

Adele:

Goodness, you are doing a lot today. And all wonderful things, although I have to admit I don't recognise "Rose Queen Cleome" or the calibracoa. Careful with the feverfew: over here if you plant one plant then you have it in your garden for perpetuity, all over the place. It just grows everywhere and keeps on coming back.

Over here it's possible to find nurseries who deliver by mail order. Often the plants are cheaper than in local nurseries and you can find a better selection. The trouble is that they may not arrive on the day yo want to plant them but it's a good idea if you want to find a lot of plants and don't want to chase all over the place looking fr them. Do you have such a facility on your side of the pond? Or there's always eBay....

Have fun with your gardening.

buffy:

Adele, we have some amazing plants-by-mail nurseries on this side of the "pond." For herbs, I use Richter's in Ontario, Canada. For perennials, I like White Flower Farm. There are half a dozen other places where I can order and be sure the plants will come in good shape. You're right about delays though.

Most of what I'm looking for I can find locally, and save on the shipping charges. I can put that money into paying for a slightly larger plant.

Yes....feverfew has feet, doesn't it? *G* I had it growing in the bed that DH "renovated" I have other little plants here and there in several other gardens. I should have been smart and just transplanted one of them. I also bought more thyme than I needed, but the rest of my choices were pretty reasonable. I have feverfew, lamb's ears, thyme and California poppies all growing in the walkway of the herb garden right now.

We need to Google "cleome." I think it's also called spider plant, here. It's a tall annual that is VERY easy to grow, and I bet you'd like it in your gardens.

Wow... lots of planting. Of course I'm not certain where to plant the plants I have here in westcliffe. I took pepper and tomato plants back to Denver for SRC to plant in garden back there. He's not around to help me build a raised bed for here with a fence around it so I'm in a quandary as to what to do? Not ready to go out any way, June 1st for me so still time maybe. haha

buffy:

Our raccoons maurade here, the way your wildlife does. I've read about fenced beda, but they are never clear about entry ways. I don't envy you the need to outwit all of them. The deer who pass through here LOVE bean starts. I tried planting one for me and one for them, and the STILL ate them all! *G* Good luck with your garden, Janet.

Joy:

I'm pooped just reading...

More power to you Buffy...and I hope you're getting enough sleep and taking your vitamins while trying to do all this planting. I hope no critters swoop in and ruin all your hard work. My brother in Wisconsin is having a lot of trouble with squirrels, raccoons and even deer. They're eating everything.

Good luck with it all sweetie...I know it will be beautiful when you're done.

buffy:

Joy, I'm terribly short on sleep. I plan to hit the Advil bottle and then the hay to see if I can get 8 straight tonight. I'm looking forward to a day in the garden tomorrow. I want to plant everything that is waiting to go in ground, and make a list of what I need to finish the gardens off.

I'm taking my vitamins, and trying to outsmart the critters. It's the best I can do! I hope you're enjoying our good weather!
