Window Decals for Birds

I blogged the other day about the decals we have on the windows to help the birds avoid striking the glass. There's a grove of trees to the north of the house, and their reflection in the windows lures the birds into thinking there is an escape route where there is actually window. I'm sure one of the hawks has learned to use the windows to his advantage when hunting near our feeder.

I was mistaken about the source of our decals. A friend gave two sample packages to Dear Husband, and it turns out they were being distributed by the Morton Arboretum, in the western suburbs of Chicago. The good news is, I kept the packaging, so I can share the manufacturer!

There ya go. The product has worked for me. You peel the leaf shape off the backing paper and apply the side that was to the paper to the outside of a clean window. Couldn't be any easier, and it works. I'll have to do an update to let you know how it fares during the winter.

Now, go forth and save some birds!

Thanks Buffy will try them out. I only lost a bird or two that I'm aware of. Of coarse we have hawks all over the place so they along with the dogs would take away any injured before I even get a chance to save them.
Last summer I did save a goldfinch from certain death.
Doink a bird just hit the window.

I hope they work for you, Janet. I wish I had a picture of some of the outlines left on the windows when birds crash into them. One of the Mourning Doves left an outline that looked like an angel. It seems that the birds are doing more grazing of the window and flying off rather than all out crashes. It breaks my heart to see a bird stunned on the ground. I've had a few recover and fly off, but most of them die from the shock.

I'm all for anything that will save my wildlife.

Cop Car:

What do you mean, "Couldn't be easier...."? Where does one find a window that is clean on the outside? Who will haul out the ladders required to reach the windows--and move them about? (I doubt that a decal at the bottom of a window would be very effective!) When do you plan to arrive? *smiling* Thanks for the info!

buffy:

Nice try, Cop Car! You can call a window service the same way I do! *G*

Speaking of which....I need to wash the window at the kitchen sink. When they wash the outside, they won't be able to tell if they got it clean if I don't do something about the inside, first!

As for getting the decals up into the middle of the window, I have this extender I use to pick things up, when my back is not co-operating. I bet that would work!

Cop Car:

Ummm...Buffy...recall my phone phobia? I did call a window service two years ago, and had them do inside and outside of every window that we own (except the two sky-lights, which will NEVER be washed, and the outside of the basement's escape window, which I can and do wash, myself). One year ago, I bucked up my courage, picked up the phone, and called, again. Had to leave a message. My message was that I wanted them to come out "right away" to wash the outsides of all of the windows, and to plan on doing it every six months on a regular schedule--without my having to call, again. I've not heard "boo" from them!

As to reaching to put the decals on: Not having tried it, I may be wrong, but it's a bunch different from trying to put something up or take something down. One must keep the decal from sticking to itself, and burnish it into place, no?

You just don't WANT me to have an excuse! *whimper, whimper*

Buffy:

Okay, now that you've fessed up, your kids will know what to get you for Christmas! Are you SURE you dialed the right number? I can just see a little old lady like Elegante Mother wondering what the HECK that message was about!

No excuses! As I recall these decals were VERY easy to put on the glass, or I wouldn't have suggested using the gripper. I'll try it, and if it doesn't work, I'll let you know. Go order the decals!

I can't believe you were whimpering! lol

Cop Car:

Well, when someone deprives me of all excuses, it's cause for whimpering!!
