The Goats

My mother cracked me up yesterday. I was driving her as we ran errands and she told me a pun.

When Dear Husband is away, we seem to make it a point to stand in for him telling puns. He's addicted to the simplest puns, and I prefer the long drawn out stories with the goofy punchlines. At any rate, when he is away, we feel obligated to fill in the missing puns.

EM was reading a mystery. The book wasn't particularly humorous, but it had a paragraph that hit her funny bone. Apparently, one of the characters owned three goats. The goats were named Shirley, Goodness and Mercy.

Those of you who are Christians get the pun. For the rest of you, the names are taken from this phrase "Surely, goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord," which comes from the 23rd Psalm.

Perhaps you had to be there, but I thought it was funny!

Cop Car:

Even some of us who are NOT Christians, got the pun; but, thanks for 'splaining it to us. (Do we get extra points for being able to recite the whole 23rd Psalm without looking it up?)

buffy:

Yes'm, you most certainly do! Now you have me wondering if *I* can do it.

Adele:

I'm not a Christian either but having gone to a CofE primary school I recognised the allusion also.

buffy:

Adele, You went to WHAT???

Cop Car:

Adele--I'm guessing you are trying to tell us that you went to a Church of England primary school.

Adele:

Ys, that's right. Over here many schools, especially at infant and primary level (i.e. between the ages of 5 and 11), are run by religious institutions, usually either the Church of England (CofE) or the RCs. As the only school in the village I lived in as a child was CofE I automatically went there.

buffy:

I don't know about the rest of the country, but in the Chicago area we have quite a number of religious schools. Most of them are for grades 1-8, but we also have a considerable number of high schools, too. Our high schools cover grades 9-12, and would be similar to your secondary education. I've taught at both Catholic and Lutheran schools. We have quite a range of denominations supporting schools despite the fact that the parents taxes go to support the local public school. A lot of religion supported schools have sprung up in response to the Federal government's decree that there be no prayer in school.
