Mid Summer

Mid August Herb Garden.jpg

This is the garden in high summer, when everything is in full growth, soaking up the summer sun. The white flowers in the center front of the picture are garlic chives. To the right is one of the pods of regular chives. The gray green leaves in the center left are part of an old, old sage plant, and you can see thyme creeping over the side of the box, reaching for the walkway.

On the right, Lamb's Ears match the silvery gray of the sage. That arm of the herb garden holds the lemon scented plants: Lemon Balm, Lemon Verbena, Lemon Thyme, Lemon-Scented Geraniums. I've had luck with Lemon Eucalyptus, too.

St. Francis sits in the center of the rectangular bed. It's impossible to see, but there's rosemary in front of him, and parsley and basil off to the left.

The box at the top, left of the picture holds rampant feverfew and lavender.

This is the time of year when watering becomes so necessary. Most herbs are hardy plants that can deal with a little dry soil, but these raised beds drain better than most of my gardens which are heavy clay, so this time of year we have to help the plants with regular watering. I like communing with the plants in early morning before the sun is up above the tree tops.
