Cinnamon Ornaments

We just finished making the cinnamon dough ornaments. This year I added a tablespoon each of cloves, nutmeg and allspice to the dough and the house smells marvelous.

I rolled out the dough and used cookie cutters to create Christmas shapes. And then I made my mistake. I asked Dear Husband to give me a hand putting the holes in the ornaments for the ribbon I'll use to make hangers. I was laying ornaments on the pans to dry when I realized that all the angels looked like snowmen. He felt the "wings" on my angels weren't pronounced enough and had added indentations where the coal would be on a snowman.

So, if you get to see these ornaments, you'll know just where to address your comments.

Did I tell you what he did at Thanksgiving?? The counter is covered with food, and he brings out a platter of White Castle burgers....the ones that are called "Sliders."

I'm perfecting my "evil-eye."

Ah, well, when one chooses to live life with another.... *snickering*

And here I thought I might get a little support from my friends! Hmpf!

At least your husband has the good sense to be gone for three weeks at a time! *G* I think that's how Dad and Elegante Mother managed to remain married so long. Maybe I need to suggest it to you know who....

Ok, I'm selfish, I just want the recipe for the ornaments ;~)

Cop Car:

Buffy--Truly you have my support. I was just thinking of all the things I did/would do differently while living alone! We pay--and so do they! (But, of course, unlike you and me, THEY are not perfect!)

buffy:

Jessica, I posted it earlier, but it's simple, so I'll do it again. 1 cup of ground cinnamon to 1 cup of applesauce. Use more cinnamon on the board as you roll the "dough" out to 1/4" thickness. I added one Tablespoon each, cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg to the dough before I mixed it. My hands are sensitive, so I wear rubber gloves when I mix the dough. Use Christmas cookie cutters to cut the shapes, and dry them on cookie sheets for about four days, turning daily. Don't forget to put a hole in the cookie when you cut it, for the hanging ribbon. It has to be done when they are still wet, or they will crumble. You can use an ice pick or something similar to make the hole. Good luck!

Cop Car:

Jessica--When making something from clay, that needs a hanging hole, I use a small-diameter drinking straw. This gives plenty of room for ribbon/sissal passage, looks good, and is easy. I can usually make about 6-8 holes before the clay inside the straw provides too much resistance to cut, again. Then I just cut off an inch of the straw (or use the opposite end). This approach should work on the ornaments--although, I've not yet tried it.

buffy:

What a great tip, CC! I used the end of a bamboo brochette stick. I bet the straw would work better.

I was just gonna ask for the recipe, thanks! We are stuck in the house due to icy roads. Looks like a good project!

Wished I still had a sense of smell -at Christmas time, this is a definite sad handicap.

There ya go, Pattie. We've been watching the weather news, and the roads in your area are really rotten. Snow started here about 3:00...very tiny flakes, but LOTS of 'em....by 9:00 this evening we had at least three and maybe four inches of snow. Dear Husband thinks we'll have five inches of snow by the end of the night.

Good for you for staying home! A few extra hours to prepare for Christmas has to be a blessing. *S*

We take our sense of smell for granted. Wait.....I'll blog about this.
