Well, drat!

I was just over at WHUZZUP!, seeing what Eric had to say, and he made a suggestion that was SO sensible.

Go read what he had to say about comments on Thursday, November 17th, in the post on spammers. Just disregard the entry on the penis-enlarging pills, and scroll down.

Do you suppose he's right, and that most of us have been doing this backward? After all, he has had a blog since 1998....a year BEFORE Blogger came along.

What do you think?

Cop Car:

I'm thinking, "What did he say?" I don't understand what it is that he wants everyone to do--except, maybe, not accept comments on our blogs? Please translate his intention.

If I understand it correctly, rather than commenting under the post....where you and I think it makes sense....Eric feels you should go to your own blog and talk about what he wrote, and create a link back to his blog. Then, more people would be likely to go visiting, and expand their circle of contacts.

In other words, we would help each other to develop readership. Does that make more sense?

Cop Car:

In a strange sort of way it makes sense; but, I don't understand his urge to get the whole world to read his blog. Is that an ego thing or is he a professional blogger?

buffy:

A HUGE number of bloggers compete with each other to be the best read. There is a site (I forget the name at the moment) which ranks blogs by the number of hits they get. There is a program called "Site Meter" that will keep stats on the visits to your blog. You can tell what time zone your readers come from, and where the majority of your readers live. You can find out how they are being referred to your blog....from a search engine, or from a link on another blog.

~T~ has supplied me with Site Meter so that I can keep track of how many visits I've had over time, but I blew it, by not excluding my own visits, so my numbers are tainted.

I don't know that I would call eric a professional blogger. I get the sense that WHUZZUP is his personal opinion on life, not a professional endeavor. He certainly has been cutting edge on the blogging scene, as has ~T~ who hosts my blog.

Some people feed off of the comments on their blog, and others could care if anyone reads what they are writing. I'm somewhere in the middle of the pack. I don't need to have the world come to my door, but it's sure nice to know that a handful of you care to read about my days, and it's fun to know that at least three of you may have been drawn to blogging because you were comfortable at my blog. *G*

Cop Car:

You've reminded me of site meters--that I had forgotten. Since I do not allow search engines to access my blog, I know from whence come my readers. They are all dears--and family, in one sense or another!

buffy:

I keep forgetting that you can and do control search engine access to your blog. I'm sure it keeps a lot of problems at bay.

If he wants comments to be on other peple's blogs, and to point to his, then he needs to turn off the commenting ability on his posts.

I like peaple to comment at the bottom of the post - imagine trying to run all over creation and back to follow a dialog (shudder - I don't have that kind of time).

I also like that most people are thoughtful, and if the "comment" gets too long, they make it a post on their own blog (which benefits both bloggers).

I have site meter, but I don't keep track of where people come from. Once every 6 months, or so, I may decide to see what funny searches I show up on, but that is it.

buffy:

(laughing) Bogie....sometimes my comment turns out to be longer than the post.

I'll have to keep the length of the comment in mind, I can see. I've seen Cop Car mention that she was going to take her answer to her blog, and Desiree apologized for the length of her entry. For the most part, I don't mind the length of comments.

Cop Car:

Some blog owners do mind while others don't. I also think that I should consider the blog's other readers. I'm in a special situation since my blog, on the whole, is not visited by "strangers". My readers may post as long a comment as they can bear to write. I did sometimes wonder, before Bogie gave me my own blog, whether blog owners were encouraging me to blog--so as to cut down on the amount of their space that I was taking up with long comments. *smirking*

Kids! Ya'd think they would be used to us rambling on!
