Have you ever had one of those days when everything looks fine on paper, but the reality misses the mark by a mile??

That would describe today.

My family has given me their collective cold. I had to run a couple of errands, and then I came home to start working on dinner. My niece and her sons were going to join us. I have been a little under the weather for a couple of days, but it wasn't anything that would cause me to cancel the get together.

I had planned a pork roast, a new recipe for scalloped potatoes and ham, green beans, a green salad, and a variation on the apple/dried cranberry pie that was so good last year.

The roast had not cooked all the way through by the time dinner needed to be served. The new potato recipe had great flavor, but the potatoes in the interior of the casserole were under cooked, too.

I had a package of dried mixed berries, including cranberries, which I used in place of just cranberries, in the pie. I'd used a ready made crust, but the rest of the pie was from scratch. On paper, it looked like it would be really good, but the mixed berries made for a very odd taste.

Everyone did their best to put a good face on the situation. We ate salad while we waited for the roast to finish cooking. The outer edges of the potatoes tasted fine, and we all ate our pie, despite the comments being traded. Still, it was one of the worst meals I can remember preparing, and I'm really ticked to have put so much effort into it, and have it turn out so badly.

And now, the cold has bloomed. My throat is scratchy, and I can tell that I will have to work not to be crabby tomorrow.

With any luck, I'll be excused from KP for a while.

Cop Car:

Awww...come on...show us a crabby side--this once. You've earned it! Sorry that things went so miserably for you and hope that your cold doesn't linger.

buffy:

(grumble, grumble, grumble)

I'm sitting here, swathed in an old favorite black tunic sweater, feeling a lot like a black bear who has been wakened too soon from hibernation.

Last night's fiasco SO ticks me off. All that effort for SUCH A FLOP!

Will that do?? *G*

Nancy:

Come see me for a few days, sweetie! We'll make sure you get lots of TLC, and rest, and your favorite hot tea. Sorry you feel so bad!

How sweet! But...I know how busy all of you are. I'd be dragooned into helping finish the painting at the house, or I'd have to go pattern hunting with Curly Fry. Now, Tater Tots is a girl after my own heart....she and I could wrap up in quilts with books and while away the day! *G* Keep the hot tea coming!

Adele:

Buffy, sorry to hear you aren't feeling very well. Hope your cold goes away soon.

Disasters in cooking can be both disappointing and exasparating, can't they, especially when you know that usually you could cook such a meal without any problems at all. I too have days when everything goes wrong and I've come to learn that the best thing to do is just to give up and try again another day.

I have to admit that if in your shoes I would have given up and phoned for a takeaway.

buffy:

Takeaway would have been better, for sure! Unfortunately, it would have put dinner right on top of bed time, so we just dealt with it..

You're right. This was a meal I should have been able to do in my sleep. I don't know what was going on, but it was truly a wasted effort!
