My opening gambit in the "Who Will Be Cooking Dinner?" war, was "Dear, do you have a taste for liver, or would you rather order Italian beef tonight?"
As gambits go, I thought that was a pretty solid one.
I've been trying to decide what to do about dinner tonight. I had a bad night, sleeping fitfully, and got up at 5:00 so that I could go to a 6:30 physical therapy appointment. What I'd REALLY like to do, is just go to bed and forget about dinner.
Popcorn, anybody???

Popcorn is ALWAYS a good bet for dinner. Actually, I was somewhat surprised that the government did not include Popcorn as a major food group!

Popcorn it is! At times, that is what we have for "supper".

Good point, Dudette! It certainly could be here. When I first met DH, he and his three boys told me that ICE CREAM was a food group. I'm glad that the ice cream has lost some of it's allure, but I doubt that popcorn will ever pass out of favor!

Now that you ask: ice cream wins, handily, over popcorn. We didn't have ice cream very often when I was a kid, so it still holds great allure for me. (This allure is somewhat negated by concern for my cholesterol level!) Popcorn wasn't as scarce, although "snack foods" were not usually to be found in my extended family's houses. I was amazed, when I started babysitting (to be a name-dropper: I was babysitting for the niece and nephew of Gary Hart's wife) and their parents told me that the kids could have ice cream if they wanted it--that it was in their freezer. Wow! They were living large! (Of course, little mouse that I was at 13, it would never have occurred to me that they meant for me to have some, too!)

Isn't it funny how restrained we were as kids, compared to the kids 50 years later???

I've always thought chocolate as a food group but I am satisfied to accept ice cream as one!
Can Dear Husband cook? Mine does, so much there are sometimes battles to see who will stay out of the kitchen while dinner is being prepared. Any thought of giving DH a range of ingredients, a simple recipe and telling him to get on with it? Especially while you are having trouble with your shoulder. How is it, by the way?

Yes, he's a great cook, except things land on the ceiling. I don't think he is as interested in cooking as your hubby, but he can produce healthy, good tasting dinners. Usually we work together after I decide just what's for dinner. I'd like him to take a bigger hand in the decisions about what we're having.
Chocolate.....yeah, now and then I could make it a food group! *G*
My shoulder seems to be on the mend. I spent two and a half hours weeding this morning and still feel pretty good. To be on the safe side, though, I'm going to use some heat on it before bed.
Drat.....I never thought about crying off some of my kitchen duties while I was working on the arm. Do ya think it's too late now??

Sounds like you blew the opportunity, Buffy. Make a mental note for future reference!
I cannot even relate to Buffy and Adele when they get to talking about husbands who cook. Hunky Husband is capable of doing more than he does, but he wouldn't want to demonstrate it. When he makes his own coffee, pours his own Cheerios into a bowl, and peels his own hard-cooked eggs, he feels that he's done his cooking! (His mom told me that he used to help cook for their boarders, but he denies it!)

Silly woman! You KNOW I don't eat liver. It was a threat. I gag at the thought of COOKING it let alone eating liver.
Ya know, Jamie....I think Adele's hubby is the exception who makes the rule. It seems to me that most of the women I talk with say the same thing. THEY plan the meals, do the shopping, cook the meal and do the clean up, with occasional help here and there from their families.
It's selfish of me, but as I get older, I feel that if you want me to do all the work, you better be happy eating what pleases me.

Wait a minute!! Liver is wonderful if properly prepared (which is difficult, for me). I would have it every week or two if my cholesterol weren't such an issue. BTW: On occasion, Hunky Husband orders liver when we eat out--since he no longer gets it at home. I should note that one of his favored dishes, that hasn't been prepared for a long spell, is kidney stew over polenta--the way his mother made/served it.

Oh, man! That's wrong.....just wrong!I have another friend who swears that tongue sandwiches are a delicacy....
EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!

I must confess to having bought a tongue, once (years ago!), but I don't recall ever using it. It probably got pitched because I never "got around" to fixing it. I used to grind up beef heart to make low fat chili; but, I haven't done that in ages--because what little fat it has is so bad for us. I can make a meal from chicken gizzards. I'm salivating.
Surely you at least like sweet breads and mountain oysters???
