Souper Supper 2005

Tonight is the annual Souper Supper for my quilting bee. The bee meets the first Friday of each month, and in February we have the tradition of having a meal together. I'm making soups and roasted garlic with toasted French bread slices and baked Feta cheese. The rest of the ladies are bringing bread, salad, crudités, fruit, and dessert. It's a pleasure to "break bread" with friends.

I'm going to make three soups: Navy Bean Soup, Minestrone (scroll down to the entry for April 25th), and Cheddar Chowder. I'll have tons too much soup, but I'll freeze the bean soup and give it to my oldest sister, who raves about it. The rest of the soup will be dinner on Saturday, so that I don't have to cook.

This group of ladies also get together for Salads and Burgers for the Fourth of July, and this year we are talking about going out to dinner in December. THEY get a LOT of quilting done, so it seems like a good idea to give them a little TLC now and then.

Cop Car:

It exhausts me just to read of the entertaining that you do. How wonderful of you to be such a full participant in your bee: they got a winner!

(Laughing) Cop Car.....I'm a hermit! I wonder what entertaining you're talking about? Easter, the Exercise Luncheon, Thanksgiving, Mother's Open House, Christmas, a monthly visit of Mother's Empty Nester's sewing group, and twelve visits from the quilters.....that's not what I'd call a lot of entertaining! The bee and sewing group don't require any effort most of the time.

Cop Car:

Well, let's see: the last time I had people over who were not related to me was in about 1986--in Albuquerque. And that didn't turn out too well. Before that it was October of 1983 or 1984--in Los Angeles. And that didn't turn out too well. Let's go back to the Fall of 1959. Nope. That didn't turn out too well. If you're a hermit, we're going to have to invent a new word to describe people like me!

The word is "smart!" You don't have to worry about having enough chairs, or if the recipe is going to turn out! lol Luckily, MOST of my visitors are related to me, and those who aren't are very forgiving.

I was right.....I had a couple of gallons of soup leftover. Most of the Navy bean soup will go to one of my sisters, and I won't have to cook dinner Saturday.

Cop Car:

You and the Soup Nazi, huh? It's good for you to have a day off of cooking every now and then--especially when you cook so intensely (as in: you don't just throw stuff into a pan and serve it up! You think in terms of real dishes in pleasing combinations. Hunky Husband would be satisfied to alternate between spaghetti & meat sauce and beans & weenies for lunch--if he could have pizza for dinner each evening!)

Cop Car, Dear Husband would eat just like HH if he could. The day the docs tell him "NO MORE HOT DOGS!" will be the day he gives up on life.

You know, there's a drawback to cooking interesting food now and then. Once your family discovers you can do it, they expect you to do it all the time. I don't want a steady diet of pizza, but I don't lead the style of life that allows me to spend the entire day in the kitchen every day. The occasional "planned over," or dinner out is a blessing, and I'd be happy to settle for a grilled cheese sandwich now and then!
