Testing

This is the month when I do all sorts of tests. In October, I have an annual physical. They do a CBC and all sorts of attendant tests. I get a mammogram, and I check in with the dermatologist, the neurologist and either the dentist or the periodontist. It's a busy time, trying to get the appointments scheduled, and still see to my mother's needs and work.

Right now, I feel like a pin cushion!

Despite the holes, I think that it's good to have an annual checkup. If your parents have passed health concerns on to you, it never hurts to know where you stand, and get the jump on anything that might go wrong.

So....if you haven't made your appointments, do it NOW! Especially those mammograms, ladies! I know they are a wretched test, but it could save your life. So, buck up! Make the call.

Mammograms? Only avaialable to the over 50s (in some areas over 55s) in the UK (even for those with family histories of problems), unless the woman notices something abnormal. Very difficult to find anywhere to have one done privately either.

You just wouldn't get to see a neurologist (or dermatologist) (even privately) over here, unless you had a problem, or major pre-exisiting/chronic problem.

Your health-care system and ours are *so* different. I'm not sure that the statistics would show that people over there are a whole lot healthier either...

Yes, it's a very different world. I have both English and Scottish friends who have told me about their trials and tribulations with your health care system.

I'll grant you that we may not be more healthy than you are, but at least we have the option to pursue health care, if and when we wish, and we are not denied care when it is needed.

I'm not advising the world to see a dermatologist, or a neurologist. I have appointments with them because I have pre-existing conditions. If you wish to continue taking the medication they prescribe, you have to see them on a regular basis.

Frankly, I hope to be at a point in my life where I can drop some of those appointments. My oldest sister is not on any medication of any kind, and my goal is to get as close to that situation as possible by the time I retire.
