Violets

The violets have started to bloom!

Part of our lot was once a horse pasture. There are trees that divide it into sections, making it almost look like it has rooms. The part that is south of the house has areas that are totally covered in violets. There's a patch of trillium that Dear Husband has been told not to mow down, a section of trout lilies that he insists on mowing, and a stretch of May apples growing among the trees on the east edge of the property. Soon we'll see naturalized phlox blooming there, too.

When I first started my gardens I left the violets because I didn't have enough plants to fill the space. Then it became a contest to fill in around them. Now, I rip them out of the gardens with abandon, because I know that we have violets all over the place! Still.....it's a special time when their deep purple, or blue or white flowers open up and cover the ground.

The daffodils have been spectacular so far. Because we've had a streak of cool weather, the Ice Follies have lasted longer than usual. I plan to bring some inside tomorrow morning because warmer weather is on it's way, and we'll loose them to the heat.

The mid-season daffs are just opening, and the later ones are just forming buds. I have enough variety planted that we have daffodils in bloom for a month or so. When they start to fade the peonies and iris begin to put on a show. Spring is lovely here.

I'm still trying to extend the bloom season of my perennials well into summer. I have chrysanthemums, and asters, and purple coneflower and obediant plant that bloom in the fall, but in the late heat of summer, only my annuals are holding forth. That's not bad. I just want to get to know more perennials!

At any rate....it's time to enjoy the violets! Can lilacs be far behind?

PJ:

Violets & Lilacs? I'm jealous! They just don't do well here - summer gets too hot. I baby a few tiny stands of violets, but it is a chore to keep them going.
