The Easter Gorilla

Most families are visited by the Easter Bunny. My sister's family not only has the Easter Bunny, they are also visited by the Easter Gorilla.

My sister has four children by her first husband. Those four children are closely grouped in age. Their parents divorced, and my sister married again. When the youngest of her four children was twelve, they gained a baby brother.

For all intents and purposes, this little boy had six parents. Each of his siblings had a hand in raising him, and no one spoke baby talk to him. Unfortunately, his olders sibs learned early on that they could prime him with "adult" comments, and he would be a willing co-conspirator in the game of "Show Mommy what you learned today!"

When he was just old enough to appreciate the idea of getting gifts, his older brothers and sisters found that they needed more excuses to be giving him gifts, and so the "Easter Gorilla" was created. RJ's brothers and sisters knew what was cool and made sure that he had all their favorite toys, plus anything new that had come along in the intervening years.

I was visiting one year and got to see the stack of presents waiting for him. Frankly, I think it's a wonderful invention! The Easter Bunny only brings candy. The Easter Gorilla brings more lasting gifts, and he brings things that are too big to fit into an Easter basket. It's every child's dream, and it makes the wait for Christmas go a little faster.

My second grandchild is set to make her appearance in May. Before she is a year old, I plan to introduce her to the Easter Gorilla, that mysterious gift giver who comes in the Spring.

By the way.....that little boy is now a daddy, and I wouldn't be surprised if his little boy will be visited by the Easter Gorilla this year.
