Car Happy

For the first time, we have reached the point where the average American household has more cars than registered drivers.

From the Chicago Tribune, Saturday, August 30:

"WASHINGTON -- For the first time, the typical American family has more vehicles in the garage than licensed drivers in the house.

There are about 107 million U.S. households, each with an average of 1.9 cars, trucks or sport-utility vehicles and 1.8 drivers, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics reported. That equals about 204 million vehicles and 191 million drivers."

And this isn't even counting the Harleys! No wonder houses come with two and three and four car garages these days.

...do americans use their garages for cars?...as I look out me window of the 12 garages that I can see only 2 are used for keeping the car in :^)...

Some of us do, billy. We have three cars and a three car garage. Two of the cars are in the longer bays and one sits outside. The shorter bay holds the lawn mower, garbage cans, bird seed, gardening equipment and the freezer. And in the winter it also holds wood for the fireplace.

There are actually some towns or subdivisions that require you to have all your cars off the street at night, and some even require you to have them in the garage. That may be one of the reasons why Americans are so garage happy.

I'll just be happy to get a working garage door back on our house!!! We have had to wait until the inlaws return from the Harley Anniversary gathering so hopefully by the upcoming weekend we won't have to manually force our garage door up and can get back to just hitting a button!!! And should I ever get lucky enough to win the lottery and get another vehicle the license plate will read "jetstoy" *big grin*!!!

Garage - what's a garage? Until recently we had 4 vehicles: a plow truck that hadn't been registered for 3 years; my SUV (midsize and yes it gets 25 MPG - just to keep from getting blasted by SUV haters); WS's light truck; and a car.

We kept the plow truck for, well, plowing - but recently sold it. WS drove the car for a couple of years until we got him the truck. Then we kept the car because it was always on loan to one friend or another. Our friends have since gotten reliable vehicles so we are trying to sell that. When it is sold, we will be down to 2 vehicles (not counting the bikes).

No garage though - that is on the wish-list for when we win Megabucks!
