Compromising

I’ve talked about it before. I dislike seeing the promotion of Christmas prior to Thanksgiving. For those of you who may read this blog who are not from the USA, Thanksgiving falls on the fourth Thursday of November, which is the 24th, this year.
I know that a lot of people are so heavily into Christmas as a decorating/cooking/gift giving/party season that they need more time to prepare than I do, but it bothers me to see us commercialize Christmas. With that in mind, I refrain from decorating or starting my shopping until after Thanksgiving.
Usually.

As my niece helped me clean this past week, I gave her a free hand in moving things around. Last year, or maybe it was two years ago, I bought a fake Sitka spruce about as tall as I am, and covered it with the ornaments my quilting bee has given me over the years. I decided I liked it so much that I left it up year round. (I know….so much for not rushing the season.)
My niece decided that the appropriate place for the tree was in the foyer, where everyone could see it when they came in. I struggled with the idea. I tried to discourage her. I said…”We’ll see.” And when she left, the tree was in the foyer, shining brightly.
I thought for sure my oldest sister would side with me on the subject, but when she walked into the house she said….”How adorable!!” The general consensus was that my niece was right, and I should accept it.
It’s growing on me. I’m going to buy a timer for it for the next 6 weeks so that the tree can go on and off without any help from me, but in January, the tree gets moved. Whether it gets put away is another issue.

  1. I agree with Eldest Sis and Niece. That tree was meant for the foyer! Get with the program, girl! So glad you reminded me of the cinnamon ornaments. The ones I made with the girls when they were little don’t smell any more. Sounds like a great way to start the season . . . when I get around to it!

  2. What do you mean…”When I get around to it!”??? You mean to tell me that you haven’t been filling in all the little crevices of your day with holiday planning??
