FUBAR alert

I’m not even sure where to start with this. By rights it ought to be a rant, but there’s a lot of general stuff, too, so I guess it’s just a semi-rant.
I wanted to blog on Saturday, but my computer service was so iffy that I went to bed in disgust. I could get into AOL, but AOL wouldn’t let me connect to any of your blogs or visit any websites. I’m really spoiled now. I’m used to getting on line without any problem, so when I hit a night like this it’s incredibly frustrating.

The weekend actually started out reasonably well, too. Dear Husband decided to stay overnight on the boat again, so we were pretty laid back here. I worked in the front gardens Saturday morning planting some iris and weeding. Then I spent the early afternoon doing paperwork, took a short nap, and then I had the chance for some uninterrupted quilting. That doesn’t happen very often, so I take advantage when it comes my way. I know….you’re all thinking about the wild and crazy life I lead.
Sunday morning I weeded for two hours in the herb garden. I got about half of it done, and set the sprinkler so I could continue today. I cleaned the mud off…well, really I pampered myself for a bit, and then hit the computer to find that all it would give me was an error message.
I called Dell and spent about 90 minutes working with one of their techs. He had me unplug EVERYTHING from the back of the computer and then slide the case off. When he told me I was going to be playing with the hardware, I almost balked, but I needed to get the computer running before Fred came home to do payroll. He actually had me unplug the hard drive cable and the CD rom cables…….and I got it all back together and working! Yea, ME! I’ve never touched the innards of a computer before!
I told DH I deserved hazzard pay, and he got the payroll done. No hazzard pay in sight. (sigh)
This morning I worked on the second half of the herb garden. It’s still not finished. There was more to do in the second half. I’ll take pictures after the lawn around it has been mowed. It’s not the kind of garden that you offer for a qarden walk, but it’s not too shabby.
I set the sprinkler to run, and then took my mother to the doctor. He said she was fine, but just to be sure we needed to go to the hospital for an x-ray. Shot the entire middle of the day….. but Mother is fine.
So…I worked on the computer until about four and then started dinner. DH was in the office talking to his partner when the computer made some sounds like popping corn. He turned on the monitor to see what was going on….and there was another error message. I repeated the call to Dell, and to make a very dull and long story a little shorter….They are going to send a tech with a new hard drive and cable.
That means later this week I get to reprogram my computer. I may be out of commission for a bit until I get all of the programs up and running, and the office stuff takes precidence.
And…just to make the day really fine, just as dinner is ready to be served, the kitchen sink clogged. I told DH that I thought I had the better deal, having to talk to Dell. He said that he wasn’t so sure of that. He’d much rather rod out the pipes than deal with them.
I’m really hoping the next few days are going to be better. At least the herb garden looks nice.

  1. It sounds like it is time for a party!!!!!!!!! We could title it to get over all the bad things that have transpired this year type party *S*…..

  2. hey, I like playing with hardware!! someday hope to make it a full time job *g*
sorry to hear about your computer woes…but dell is one of the better brands (thankfully) and they I’ve heard wonderful things about their customer support!
you know my number if you need any help moving stuff over 😉

  3. Jamie….we need to get over the woes first! *S*
T…thank you SO much for your offer! I think hardware will remain a mystery to me, so it’s nice to have a friend who understands it. Actually, I was surprised to find how easy it was to unplug, and replug everything. They have made it a lot more user friendly than I realized.
As for Dell….yes, they have a very strong customer service dept. We have an incredible package with them. Virtually any hardware problem is covered for the first three years. We’ve replaced a CD player and now the hard drive and cables. I’d say that package was worth it’s weight in gold. And….the techs were really good at their jobs. I haven’t heard anyone else talk about these problems with Dell, so maybe I’m the jinx.

  4. Sorry to hear your P.C. is going D.O.A. Hardware is fairly easy, SOFTWARE is what screws me up. Too many variables.
    Lots of good luck.

  5. Well, at least you were able to go in and play around with the innards of the beast, and look, it gave you a pretty decent post too 🙂

  6. Thanks, WichiDude. I hope things go well. I’ve had a LOT of offers of help, so I’ll hope for the best.
Right, MB…..I’ve seen the innards now and know how to plug and unplug all the connections. I would have talked about my lack of hardware experience sooner or later. I just wish it was MUCH later! lol
