\nFirst there was gardening. My gardens are at their best in early spring, so that encourages me to get out into them. I finally returned to the blocks in May, and got them all pieced.
\nThen, during the summer, my focus was on my first trip to Hawaii. Packing for the trip, the actual trip, and then unpacking once we got home wiped out a good part of mid-summer. Traditionally, I don’t get a lot of piecing done during August.
\nIn September, I managed to get the blocks laid out and sewn together into rows. Then I had to make some decisions about borders and backing.
\nI bought the fabric to finish the borders, and wanted to try inserting a tube of color that imitated the colors in the pieced strips of the quilt. It took me a while to figure out how long those strips had to be, and the placement of the colors. I had the strips cut out, and almost pieced and then Thanksgiving preparation hit. With my mother’s open house, and the Christmas holidays, I didn’t get back to the quilt until almost New Year’s Eve. I got the varigated strip pieced, sewed on the first black border, and the color strip, and paused before I finished the last black border.
\nThen..early in January, I thought I didn’t have enough fabric for the back. I designed about six solutions for the backing, and decided to talk it over with my quilting bee. I was astonished when each of them said…”Just add a piece of fabric down the center of the back,” and then flipped their quilts over to show me that, to a woman, they had done the same thing!
\nSo, I charged forward…..got the borders on, and then measured for the back. I HAD ENOUGH!!! The quilt was finished on Wednesday night, wrapped twice in plastic, and boxed up with the batting, and a letter to the quilters, and sent off on Thursday morning.
\nWHAT A RELIEF!!!
\nI tried to take a picture of it, so that I could show it to you on this post, but the thing is so darned big that the flash only lit one small corner. We’ll have to wait until those incredible quilters are done and send it back to me, and then I’ll ask for help getting a better picture of it.
