I spent the day making Christmas cookies, and I should have gone to bed long ago. I stayed to read a few blogs. It’s been at least a week since I had the chance to visit with my blog friends, and catch up with your lives.
\nMy daughter-in-law is teaching English in Japan. A few weeks ago she wrote to beg chocolate and cookies for Christmas. Apparently, Midwestern “chocolate” and “cookies” don’t translate well into Japanese and beyond missing favorite foods, she sounded a bit homesick. I rashly promised I would send a care package with her husband. Of course, once he learned that SHE was getting cookies, he asked for them, too.<\/p>\n


\nI made six kinds of cookies. She specifically requested chocolate chips, and I made two batches, one with pecans, and one with walnuts. I can vouch for the pecan version. They tasted great with my lunch. I tried a new recipe for rugelach that I probably won’t do again, and made brownies to help curb her craving for chocolate. Then, I made the family holiday favorite, sugar crisp, a batch of raspberry ribbons, and the one bite powdered sugar cookie that has dozens of names….Russian Tea Cakes or Mexican Wedding cakes, to name two.
\nThen we had the issue of how to pack the cookies so they arrived safely. Everything but the chocolate chips went into Rubbermaid containers with layers of bubble wrap. The CC cookies went into Ziplock bags, and were nestled into a shoe box. I hope SOME of the cookies get to her safely. I suspect her husband is going to be nibbling on the long flight to Japan.
\nWe put the fixings for beef stew into the Crockpot early this morning, and then Dear Husband made a salad and garlic bread. Dinner was a bit late tonight, but it tasted fine. I’ve rinsed the dishes, and I’ll fill the dishwasher tomorrow. There’s a small stash of cookies left. I may hide a plate of them to serve on Christmas Day, because there’s no time to bake during the rest of the week.
\nSo, that’s ONE gift down! I’m almost done. One last trip to the mall and I can rest on my laurels!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
