The fact that it isn&#8217;t was brought home to me recently when someone tried to break into our garage.  Morgan Quitno compiled these figures on which states are the safest, or the most dangerous<br \/>\nObviously the far Northeastern corner of the US and the north central states have something to tell us.<br \/>\nWhat really ticks me off is how far down the list you find Illinois!<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\nDetermining the Safest and Most Dangerous State Rankings<br \/>\n1. Crime rates per 100,000 in murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary and motor vehicle theft are individually applied to a formula and compared to the national average.2. The category results are added to give each state a composite score.<br \/>\n3. The composite scores are ranked from highest to lowest to determine the safest and most dangerous states. The farther below the national average, the safer a state ranks (and vice versa) on the final list.<br \/>\nNote: Crime figures are for the most recent year for which final FBI numbers are available.<br \/>\n1 North Dakota<br \/>\n2 Vermont<br \/>\n3 Maine<br \/>\n4 New Hampshire<br \/>\n5 South Dakota<br \/>\n6 West Virginia<br \/>\n7 Montana<br \/>\n8 Wyoming<br \/>\n9 Iowa<br \/>\n10 Wisconsin<br \/>\n11 Idaho<br \/>\n12 Connecticut<br \/>\n13 Utah<br \/>\n14 Virginia<br \/>\n15 Kentucky<br \/>\n16 Minnesota<br \/>\n17 Nebraska<br \/>\n18 New Jersey<br \/>\n19 Oregon<br \/>\n20 Kansas<br \/>\n21 Pennsylvania<br \/>\n22 Rhode Island<br \/>\n23 New York<br \/>\n24 Massachusetts<br \/>\n25 Indiana<br \/>\n26 Arkansas<br \/>\n27 Colorado<br \/>\n28 Hawaii<br \/>\n29 Ohio<br \/>\n30 Washington<br \/>\n31 Delaware<br \/>\n32 Missouri<br \/>\n33 Alabama<br \/>\n34 Georgia<br \/>\n35 Oklahoma<br \/>\n36 North Carolina<br \/>\n37 Mississippi<br \/>\n38 Illinois<br \/>\n39 Alaska<br \/>\n40 Michigan<br \/>\n41 California<br \/>\n42 Texas<br \/>\n43 Tennessee<br \/>\n44 Florida<br \/>\n45 New Mexico<br \/>\n46 South Carolina<br \/>\n47 Maryland<br \/>\n48 Arizona<br \/>\n49 Louisiana<br \/>\n50 Nevada<br \/>\nIn terms of HEALTHY places to live, New Hampshire, Vermont, Hawaii and Iowa are the top four healthiest states.  Once again, Illinois leaves something to be desired, ranking #31.  Go New Hampshire!
