I Missed It

While I was getting my hair cut, my sister and Elegante Mother went to the Farmer’s Market. It’s still early in the season, but they came back with some treasures. Cherries, Red Raspberries, Strawberries, Sugar Snap peas, some Green Beans, Crimini Mushrooms, and Rhubarb were just some of the things they picked up for me.
Sis found exceptionally nice baskets on sale, half price. Had I been there, I would gave snatched up all their stock! I LOVE baskets!
I have SUCH a taste for Strawberry-Rhubarb pie. EM used to make it for my Dad when I was a kid. To make it easy on myself, I think I’ll use ready-made pie crust, but everything else will be fresh. I may visit the Simply Recipes blog to see if there’s a good recipe in the archives.
Dear Husband called it. My sis bought a kohlrabi. She loves them! She eats them raw, rather like a funky apple.

  1. Are we psychic?? I JUST made a strawberry-rhubarb pie this morning!!! The rhubard straight from my garden; the berries are local. My berry patch doesn’t produce enough for a pie yet.
    I think I feel a fever coming on . . . I think I need big sister to visit . . .

  2. My berries are “over” for the moment, and I’ve no rhubarb; so, I’ll enjoy that pie vicariously.

  3. Odd isn’t it, that we are so in sync even though we are four and a half hours apart?? I’m looking forward to your company. Will you be bringing Missy’s boyfriend??
Cop Car….you can buy rhubarb at the grocery store or the Farmer’s Market, and you can use frozen strawberries, or buy those at the Market, too. No excuses. You have to eat things that go to your hips SOME time!

  4. Yes! That’s exactly what I need–more girth. The whole pie would end up on my hips as HH would not touch rhubarb. If I get a big yen, there is a restaurant in Wichita, that used to have a facility in Derby, that specializes in pies. Their strawberry-rhubarb pie is acceptable. I really prefer plain rhubarb. I hope that you and Nan enjoy the fruits of your labors.

  5. ooh i just love pies! but even more i love crumbles…rhubarb and ginger crumble now thats just wonderful.

  6. Somehow, I KNEW what you were going to say, Cop Car. It seems to me we had this same discussion last year. I have to be reminded, ya know.
Well…I’ll concede. Since there’s only two of you, and one of you won’t touch the stuff. You COULD use Bod’s suggestion and make a one serving crumble. Boy…my mouth is watering at the thought. I may have to get this leg healed so that I can stand long enough to cook both dinner and dessert.
Yep, Joe….they won’t let me be 100% invalid. I guess I haven’t whined about the pain enough! lol

  7. Bod, I have a section in one of my older cookbooks that is “Crumbles and Crisps.” Mother and I LOVE crisps. I wait all year long for the early fall apples so that I can cook apple crisp with plenty of cinnamon and oatmeal and brown sugar. I’ve been thinking lately that the addition of pecans or walnuts wouldn’t bother me at all.
It’s very odd. Dear Husband is a very adventurous eater. There aren’t many things he says no to (liver and grilled peanut butter with sweet relish come to mind). But, he doesn’t do a lot of desserts. Pies are okay, but no cake, no crisps or crumbles. No crisps or crumbles seems unAmerican to me! I’m sure they have been served in homes across the nation ever since we BECAME a nation, and probably for 150 years before that.
It’s okay though…that means more for EM and me. (See Cop Car’s post above, and you’ll understand how my hips got this way.)

  8. Don’t get me wrong–I do like crisps, crumbles, and pies; but, I like the “filling” better. When I have pie, I normally leave the crust. Puddings and fruit compotes are my speed.
Buffy–If we had the same conversation, last year, that was in a previous life. Who remembers? *snickering*

  9. Oh, GOOD! That means I can conveniently forget these conversations and serve desserts when you come to visit! YEA!!!

  10. Mmm… Kohlrabi… I too enjoy it raw… very good! Sounds like your sis and Mom did gain some great treasures! You shall be enjoying some fabulous pie (Strawberry-Rhubarb is such a tasty combination)!

  11. I must admit that it would not occur tio me to mix together strawberries and rhubarb. I always thought that the classic combination was rhubarb and orange.
I love strawberries and rhubarb, though I prefer eating strawberries raw and on their own or just with some cream. Now rhubarb is also delicious and I have three crowns in the garden absolutely full of ripe fruit and so I am looking for recipes to use it up. Not so certain that I want to go for pie recipes though as both John and I don’t want to put any weight on and preferably to lose some and, as you know, pastry is a killer for a diet.
I’ll have to look for rhubarb recipes without fattening pastries, crumbles, etc

  12. Adele and Bod…..I’m going to blog about your comments. I have too much to say to post it here. Thanks for keeping me company and being my springing board!
