Hey, Cop Car! I think I may have found the perfect blog for you!
I was surfing this morning and found “Cooking for Engineers“!
Aw, Buffy, you’re so sweet to look out for me. Really, though, a cooking site for ME? (You gotta be kidding!) It is an interesting site to pick up miscellaneous information–in one of the discussions, they talk about a cookbook that I actually own: “Cookwise” by Shirley O. Corriher. (This is the cookbook that it took me 14 months to retrieve from my engineers, after I retired!) It gives the chemistry behind the reasons we do things in cooking. Thanks for the “steer”; but, I don’t think the site will be bookmarked on my computer any time soon. (How do you run across this wierd stuff?!)
Well, CC….SOMEBODY needs to incourage you to cook! lol
“Cookwise” sounds like an interesting book. I’m not surprised the engineers didn’t want to give it back.
I think I may have found the site when I was looking for instructions for the plum jam. You know how it is….Google comes up with a handful, and then you surf from one to a link, and on, and on.
Here, I thought I’d found the perfect addition to your blogroll. 🙁
Awwww….I wasn’t very gracious, was I? I’m sorry. It really is sweet that you think anyone can encourage me to cook at this late date. It’s sorta far fetched–like talking me into quilting. (If anyone can do it–you can!)
What do you say, Bogie? Is it worth the effort to get your mother to cook??
*G*
As much as I am (or am not, as the case may be) around for her to feed me (or us), I’d just as soon go out for meals. That way nobody is stuck with clean up shores or missing conversation because they are in the kitchen!
PS – you’re asking the wrong person as I really hate to cook. The only thing is that I love to eat, so cooking gets done.
Bogie–You should tell Buffy about your answer to the gas service man when he told you that if you stayed out of his way, he’d complete the oven repairs more quickly–and–maybe your mother would bake you a cake.
Buffy–In case Bogie doesn’t recall, her answer was, “I don’t WANT my mom to make me a cake!” I had a history of having cakes run over in the oven. Bogie grooved on cherry cake, and I just couldn’t get the hang of it. *chuckling*
Bogie, I know how to cook, but my heart isn’t in it most days. We are eating simpler meals because I don’t relish being stranded in the kitchen alone on KP duty. The exception seems to be when I have a new recipe to try, or when we have guests to dinner.
At least twice a year, maybe more, I go through the “meal planning blahs.” I can’t find anything that sounds good to eat, and I don’t want to cook something that will leave me hours of cleanup. Most of the time we resort to an off season meal for a little variety, but I’m really glad that we have the option of going out to dinner now and then.
Cop Car, I’ve had a few things grow over the side of the pan in the oven, but never a cake. Do you still have the cherry cake recipe? My advice to you is to get the oversized rolls of really heavy aluminum foil, and line the oven! *G*
No, I don’t have a recipe (may never have had one–who knows?) for cherry cake. I did learn to bake my cakes in the self-cleaning electric oven (when we built that house, it was difficult/impossible to find self-cleaning gas ovens–so–I had an “extra”, electric oven.)
We don’t talk about Jell-o in my house, either. (I need to make it in the self-cleaning oven?) Actually, now I can get Jell-o to “do right”; but it was years before I was able to get it to set. (Drinking it through a straw was an option at many meals.) I now use less water than is called for on the package.
Let’s see…what else don’t we talk about? Oh, yes…cooking!
Since cooking is so rarely done around here, cleanup isn’t a huge issue. HH sets and clears the table, when we are alone. When there is a crowd, everyone pitches in to clear the table and I either load the dishwasher (in a flash) or do the cleanup thing after everyone leaves. We’re not looking at the dirty dishes, so who cares that they are there? (Of course, perishables are taken care of, immediately!)
My recipe blog is noted above.
I would love that Cherry cake recipe!
Good luck with that recipe. I think Cop Car just got a white cake mix and added a can of cherries – thus the run-over in the oven. I could be mistaken though.
I didn’t recall the conversation with the oven guy, but my first reaction was, “I probably said I didn’t want her to bake me a cake!”
This time, Bogie, I plead innocent to your charge of using a mix. It wasn’t until years later that I discovered that mixes had a place in modern life. I would go along with you if you said that I probably just whipped up a white cake and added chopped up marachino cherries. That’s a distinct possibility. Now, I would just buy a cherry muffin mix and call it a cake!
AARRGHHHHHH!!!! UGH!! I’m sorry for the shrieks but I would never, ever, under any circumstances use a boxed cake mix. I was taught to bake cakes at a very early age and frequently make them now. But a cake mix. Never.
Come to think about it I doubt that many people would over here. There are only about two or three to be seen on the shelves of the supermarket and they look as if they are rarely bought.
OMG…..what a conversation! Cop Car, you have me rolling on the floor, thinking about the jello….
I generally don’t use cake mixes. On very rare occasions, I’ll make fudgey chocolate cupcakes from a mix and ice them with store bought fudge frosting, but if we have dessert at home, usually it is made from scratch.
I can envision the white cake mix with canned cherry pie filling added (laughing about it flowing over the sides…)…..but the marachino cherries left me gagging!
Adele, we have an entire row in the grocery store that has mixes of baked goods. For a working mom with kids who need treats for school, I bet they are a life saver.
Buffy–I think we’ll need to revive Adele from her “fit” before we can have her read any more comments–lol. Mom would have disowned me for using a cake mix. (Besides–our family much prefers her recipe for chocolate cake to anything a box can produce.)
CopCar, you said that you tried my recipe for Chocolate Brownies from my blog. Surely finding how quick and easy one can bake a cake Properly you would not need to use a cake mix.
Apart from anything else you know exactly what goes into a cake you make from scratch. Goodness knows what chemicals are in a cake mix. Ughhh.
Not to worry, Adele. I probably bake two cakes each year–at least 1 of which (chocolate) is following my mother’s recipe–which isn’t simple at all but produces the most delicious cake. If I HAD to bake a cake, tonight, it would definitely be a mix–for ease of cleanup if nothing else. *I’m pooped from putting in my 12-hour stint at the Red Cross!) I’ll leave all of those scratch cakes for those who enjoy the process of baking. I promise not to make you calculate the stress in a cantilever beam using a slide rul–lol. That would be my idea of fun, but I doubt that you would enjoy the process!
P.S. I did make your brownies, they were easy to make, and they were delicious; however, I don’t count brownies as “cake”. Cakes are light and fluffy.
I was right! Can’t you tell from all these posts that Cop Car having a cooking blog would be a hoot???!
Adele, I’ll have to go compare your brownies to the recipe we’ve used for years that we call “Mom’s Brownies.” She swears that they are a Betty Crocker recipe, but when I compared them, they are different. Maybe Betty has changed HER recipe over the years. We must make a pan of brownies more than a dozen times a year, usually if we are expecting visitors. I made them Labor Day morning, and we still have half a pan left. (I plan to remedy that situation tonight.)
One of the reasons we so rarely use a cake mix is that almost all of my family prefers birthday pie. (I don’t suppose this is the time to admit that I tend to use ready made pie crusts, is it?) *G*
My dad was the only one in my immediate family who made a decent pie crust. HH prefers pies to cakes (because his mom made strudels and pitas, which are closer to pies and not at all like cakes, I guess). He likes pecan pie for his birthday. Think I said before, that, we usually have puddings for holiday desserts–date or snowflake. I also make a thing that Elder Brother calls my “flim flam” because it’s really a pseudo flan. OK. Maybe I should start a new blog to share my dessert recipes??
I Love it…..”flim flam.” DH will enjoy it too…and endless variations on it! lol
