Busted!

I’ve blown my right knee. My-Sister-The-Nurse tells me that’s the technical term for having a knee that hurts so badly that I can barely walk.
Yesterday, I took my “wonky” knee to the doc to see if he could do anything for me. I told him that I could walk, but it was uncomfortable when I sat in my office chair or laid in bed. I’ve been taking Advil and using heat on the knee, which help temporarily.
Well, Doc twisted and turned my leg to confirm what he thought was wrong. He said to wait two to six weeks to see if it got better, and if not I should see the orthopedist.
As I walked out of the doc’s office the knee began to really hurt, and by the time I got home, it was so painful that I had to use my cell phone to call my mother (I was in the garage…she was in the house), and ask her to bring one of her canes to me. I don’t think you can call my step a hobble….it must have looked worse than that. It was a step-LUNGE sort of gait.
I can walk today, but it’s painful, and I’ve spent the morning at my computer with my leg elevated a little. Everyone else is doing MY work. My stepson had to water the plants in containers before he went to work. Dear Husband will have to take over most of dinner prep. Elegante Mother has been carrying things around for me, and I’ve run her ragged. I wouldn’t be able to get through the day without her help.
I’ve called the doc, and left a message with the receptionist. I should have just said “OWW! MAKE IT BETTER!” I suspect that he will tell me to wait it out.
It’s hell to get old knees. Doc thinks this is what comes from 17 years of gardening on my hands and knees. I hope it heals so that there are a few more years of pain-free walking! Susan….I can REALLY empathize with you now. I don’t know how you’ve made it through all your foot problems with no help!

  1. 6 weeks is a long time to wait it out tho buffy…i hope he can do something for you before that.

  2. Get a second opinion!! 6 weeks to wait and if there is something major wrong will only make things worse!!!!!

  3. When WS blew out his knew several years ago, he was told the same thing – wait 6 weeks. When it was better (although not completely) at 6 weeks, he was told to wait aother 4 weeks.
For most cases, time is the only way to heal. However, not being able to walk at all does not sound like “most cases.”
    Good luck with healing up!
PS – should you be icing it (not heat) to cut down swelling? No, I’m not a doc, I just play one for my pets sometimes – LOL.

  4. Ouch! So… he didn’t say what he is suspecting? Joint and limb pains are so interruptive in our lives! I hope this problem does resolve for you, Buffy.
I sure know how limiting decreased mobility can be!

  5. bogie….no swelling, but a lot of pain, and the heat helps with the pain We’ll know better what’s going on after they take the x-ray this afternoon.
Des, my family is SUCH a big help….I can’t tell you how much I’m depending on them right now. My oldest sis has come to take Elegante Mother shopping, and that’s a blessing. My youngest sis is going to come for an extended visit. Thank goodness!

  6. Jamie, I DID get a second opinion. I’m in an immobilizer for three weeks and then I go back to see the specialist. That’s not as bad as six weeks…and I was already instinctively imobolizing my knee at home.

  7. Buffy, I am so sorry to hear this news. All I can suggest is to lay back and just enjoy the fact that you can’t do anything for the next few weeks, beit 3 or 6 weeks. Just imagine, at least you have a real reason to take life easy… and you have such a busy life it must be nice to take some time off for once.

  8. That sounds like a lovely suggestion, Adele. Can’t you see me reading book after book, and seeing all the movies I’ve been waiting to see?
Actually, there will be some work mixed in, because I can sit at my desk. I’ll have to blog about the last two days, because I’ve been astounded at the amount of office work that I’ve gotten done.
Thanks, for visiting. It was nice to have your company this morning. *S*

  9. I’ve been very blessed with help from my family, Desiree. My grandnephews are here today. One deadheaded in the garden for me, and the other put down mulch to keep the weeds down. I can’t say enough about my family, taking such good care of me.
