Word of the Day 2

Troglodyte……
The ape driving the car next to mine had the development of a troglodyte when it came to rules of the road.
I am frequently astonished what they let get behind the wheel of a multi-ton vehicle. More and more I’m seeing people who do what pleases them, rather than following the laws that have been set down for all. One of the best places to watch for offenders is in the parking lot of major chain stores.

Since the offenders are on private property, they feel that they can do as they please, regardless of the safety of those around them. Totally ignoring stop signs is so common that a pedestrian risks his life trying to get into the store.
Driving the wrong way down an aisle is another frequent flaunt of the rules, as is parking in no parking zones. Failing to give pedestrians right of way, and parking in handicapped parking zones when you want to drop off your laundry, are two others.
I sat in my car yesterday, waiting for my mother, for all of five minutes, and saw all of that. Had I been there longer, I’m sure I could have found an entire race of troglodytes in cars! It makes me want to run around shouting “Citizen’s Arrest! Citizen’s Arrest!”
Someone should have told me when we decided to rewrite the rules!

  1. Uggg, I agree, parking lots are bad, but I still have to say, the concept of MERGING onto a freeway is beyond most humans, not to mention Troglodyts. I ride motorcycles, and my ‘Zuki is my only transportation, which means I face Austin traffic twice a day and am constantly crowded, pummelled and buffeted by cars, trucks, and on rare occassion, a bicyclist who doesnt quite grasp the difference between his 30 lb scrap of aluminum and a 500 pound scoot. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been run off the road, had idiots crawling up my tailpipe, and just generally being vehicularly assaulted by moronic idiots.

  2. Over here we have a phenomenon called “white van man”, known for driving a (usually dirty) white van and taking no prisoners when it comes to bad road manners. Never do they follow the Highway Code, keep to one lane, show any sign of good manners or care about any of the other road users. And as they are usually workers driving their employer’s vehicle they don’t care at all if the van gets damaged at all.
When the Husband had to hire a van to help the Stepdaughter move house the van the hire company gave him was white. He said that it was amazing how every other vehicle on the road got out of the way of him. ~grin~

  3. Gypsy, I’ve never looked at it from your point of view, probably because I’ve not been brave enough to get on a motorcycle or a scooter. It has to be terrifying to have cars and trucks treat the space you are in as theirs! I don’t care for most traffic like that, and I’m surrounded with a bit more metal.
I guess the “Me” generation is experiencing a boom. Hopefully they will take each other out, and not those of us who know the rules of the road. Drive defensively!

  4. Cool, Adele! Maybe we ALL need to drive white vans for a while! (GRINS) I bet your hubby enjoyed the “respect” if only for the day.

  5. The rules are these: The larger vehicle has the rightofway (the censor won’t let me hyphenate the terms). Of two similarly-sized vehicle, the older vehicle has the r.o.w. Of two vehicles of similar size and age, the ugglier vehicle has the r.o.w. Last, but not least, the meanest old woman has the r.o.w.
When I drove my big, old, Buick Electra (1971 moldel), it was “Outta my way, folks.” Lol!!! One day in Albuquerque, where they truly believe that if you don’t like the way they drive you should either get off of the sidewalk or at least get out of their way, I had a beaten-up old (white) pickup try to pass me on a freeway by pulling to my right into the “off-ramp” lane. I about ran that sucker into the abuttment where the off-ramp lane made the turn to descend. He eventually decided that I was serious and hit his brakes. I no longer have a yellow (New Mexico) tag on my car, nor do I have a big, old car, so I am no longer allowed to drive like that. Although I’ve seen some bad drivers in Kansas (merge? what’s that?), they don’t have the attitude that was prevalent in NM. When in Rome….
