Gardening-the Next Day

OUCH! I need a new body!
I spent about four hours on my hands and knees in the garden under the front sitting room window. It was heavily mulched last year, but a lot of seeds were trying to take root, and I have an infestation of crab grass. I got about half of the garden across the front of the house weeded, and I planted a dozen or so annuals and perennials.
I need to plant a few more rows of spinach and dill, and this time I’ll add a couple of rows of romaine, too. In about ten days, I can plant tomatoes.
My efforts are puny compared to my sister and my niece and my friend, Cop Car, but I’d really need a new body to keep up with them.
I hope to do some more gardening either tomorrow afternoon, or Saturday, depending
on the weather. It’s Spring, after all. We dance to Mother Nature’s tune.

  1. On the contrary, Good Friend Buffy. When I was your age, I could and did put in several hours at a time. Now, if I stay out 45 minutes at a time, that is about enough. Yesterday, in 20-, 25-, and 45-minute chunks, I put in a total of a bit more than 1 1/2 hours–NOT 4! I have to sneak up on longer work times, slowly; and, do not these days get to put in enough days in a week to do so.
Why haven’t I thought to plant romaine. That would be delicious!
BTW: Let me know what store one shops for new bodies.

  2. Ya know, my friend….I think you’ve discovered the sane way to get things done. Too bad I haven’t found that same path for myself.
I keep getting this e-mail from the Parts Store. Too bad they don’t have the entire model for sale! *G*

  3. It’s your turn to laugh, Buffy. For all of my talk, I find that I have sore muscles, this morning–from the one thing I failed to mention. I swung an axe for a few minutes–obviously a couple of minutes too long. All together now: ooooohch!

  4. OUCH! I’m not likely to laugh at you….not feeling the way I do. Instead, I’ll commiserate.
I’ve never learned to use an ax. I’ve always been afraid that I would end up chopping off a toe or some other part of me that I need.
At exercise class, our guru is forever working our shoulder joints. I’ll have to share some of the warm-ups with you so that you’re ready to chop next time.
I hope this passes, and soon! We’ve got to take better care of ourselves! *G*

  5. So you finally got out into your gardens, did you? Well maybe your body is paying for it, but I know the rest of you is feeling very good about it. Looks like you got a lot done Buffy. I don’t think your efforts were puny at all. Besides, knowing you…you’ll get it all done soon….Have a wonderful weekend….gardening included…Love, Joy

  6. Glad you got out in the gardens – but you really need to learn to pace yourself! 4 hours of anything all at once isn’t good for you – all things in moderation (yes, I know, one day these words will come back and haunt me as I’m trying to garner sympathy for doing something exactly like that).
Hope you get over the soreness soon!

  7. HA! Bogie, your turn is coming. I’ve been thinking for years that I should be working in small increments, but once I get started, I just can’t seem to stop. It’s worse now that I don’t have to go in to check on my mother periodically.
Still, Cop Car’s advice is wise, as you well know. I’m going to have to break down what needs to be done into smaller jobs. For instance, I need to plant three shrubs that I bought two weeks ago. I need to empty out the dirt in the containers for the sidewalk. I need to plant those containers. I need to finish cleaning out the north end of the herb garden. And, I need to use the weedeater on the NW, the N and the East sides of the house. So, how many days will that take me??? *G*

  8. Buffy–Thanks for your wishes. The sore muscles were gone within 36 hours of making themselves known. Do, do, do, plant one shrub at a time…weedwhack 15-20 minutes at a time….
Like Bogie, I fear that I may want your sympathy for ignoring my own injunctions, though. We’re human, aren’t we? You have my sympathy.
