For some reason, I've been thinking about my 10th wedding anniversary lately. It's only sort of around the corner, arriving in April 2009. But we'd like to drop the boys off with a set of grandparents and take a trip somewhere special. Maybe it's the planner in me who would like to pick a place, reserve it, save up and have it paid off by the time we put foot to ship, sand, surf, snow or scenery.
We think we'd prefer somewhere tropical vs. frozen. We love the idea of Alaska, but the Petite Filet says that sounds like an "old people" trip (and it won't be that warm in April). I don't remind her that we're not that far from being old people ourselves. Hawaii is appealing, but we'd much rather have more happy naked time unfettered by jet lag, thankyouverymuch. Mexico? Not really on our list. We can drive a few minutes and feel like we're in Mexico already.
This is where you come in. Got any suggestions? Somewhere you've been or always wanted to go? Good or bad stories about cruises, resorts or various Carribean islands? Do you own your own island and would be willing to let us borrow it for about a week? Don't be shy! I need all the help I can get.

Good luck choosing your special vacation place.
I'd love to take the trip across Canada by rail to Alaska. Does that make me old?
We went to Miami and Key West for our honeymoon and the Miami part was great. Key West was okay, though we inadvertantly ended up there during "Fantasy Fest". Imagine middle aged people, lots of nudity and latex body paint.
I highly recommend St. Thomas and some of the other US Virgin Islands! St. Thomas is a short flight from Miami, and the beaches are beautiful. When I was there (admittedly, someone else paid for it), I stayed at the Marriot Frenchman's Reef, and I highly recommend it. St. John is also really nice, and has some of the best snorkeling in the world if that's your thing.
Hey, another blogger, I forget who, recently blogged about an anniversary trip she and her husband took to Puerto Rico. Apparently San Juan is really lovely and historic, and the beaches are great!! Might be worth checking out.
My oldest daughter and son-in-law went to Zihuatanejo, Mexico and really enjoyed it. (though you said no way mexico).
She has also been to the Bahamas and said that was absolutely the best vacation beach-wise.
There's always Hawaii - so beautiful - expensive - but beautiful.
Our best trip was the one we took accidentally. For our 10th anniversary we were going on a cruise around the Hawaiian Islands. The day our tickets arrived, the cruise line filed for bankruptcy.
We wound up exploring New England in December 2001 only because Providence sounded like a nice place to start and it was a non-stop flight from Houston.
That was the best trip ever. We stayed in beautiful hotels all over New England and we had no prior reservations at and dined in locally owned restaurants. Our only rule was no chain food.
We wound up in Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, Manhattan, Providence, Montreal, Toronto, Jamestown and Newport. The mansions in Newport are unbelievable.
We've traveled a lot, so I don't know what would be my favorite, but they all have been what I was in the mood for at that time.
Good luck narrowing down your choices. I can't wait to see what you come up with.
