I read a quote recently that said people who live in big houses use 60 percent of them, and people who live in small houses use 100 percent of them.
Our house is somewhere in between, not being particularly small (1,750 square feet of living space) and not being anywhere near large. I can say we don't occupy 100 percent of our house every day, especially because the room over the garage gets hot in the summer. It's primarily a playroom for the Cutlet, most of the time merely an overflow for toys that won't fit in his room. Our guest room, which is the dog's room when we are not blessed with company, also serves as a dumping ground when it's just the fam.
That means it's probably time to declutter. We don't need a bigger house, we just need less crap. In the next few weeks, I hope we can separate the keepers from the donation and yard-sale piles. Ugh, I hate holding yard sales but our past success (an $800 take a few years ago) is almost too strong to ignore. Usually we can ditch the bulk of our load in the early hours before being able to fry eggs and boil water on the driveway.
How about you? Would you rather live in a big house or a small house? Any yard sale tips?
By the way, the photo above is of the carpet in the upstairs playroom, which is meant to resemble wood planks. It's old and a little gross, but it's just too funny to rip up.

HAHAHA! That carpet cracks me up . . . we had a similar carpeting in the kitchen of the house I grew up in (yep, the KITCHEN!) . . . when it was new it fooled people, but as it got older and older, mmm, not so much.
As for yard sales, I hate doing them! If nothing else, I would wait for cooler weather. Like in November.
I'm an advocate of the small house. I'd like to make as small a mark on the earth as possible. Plus, bigger house does mean more crap and who really needs more crap?
I got a big house but use less than 50% of it. With all the activities we got going we are rarely there. We really only need a place to sleep, a TV room for when we are home and a kitchen and laundry room. All other rooms are obsolete. I've thought about downsizing.
Tips for a yard sale? Decide if you are willing to sell something dirt cheap to keep from lugging it back into the closet or attic or to goodwill. Rather than sell a pair shoes for .50 you could take to Goodwill and deduct $2-$5.
We moved from a medium-sized house to a medium/large. We were just outgrowing our house. This one really does get used 100% - the kiddo managed to take over the guest room and the game room upstairs!
so many of my friends with kids my girls' age (late high school/college) are moving into bigger houses. I don't get it.
my house is about 2000 sf and it is old and needs a 1000 things done to it, but as the kids leave, one by one, it keeps getting bigger and bigger and at some point, I will regain order here.
Cool carpet. As for your question, everyone has a different penchant.
