I had my eyes checked this past Saturday, and wandered into an optical store afterward to see about getting my Rx updated in new eyeglass frames. I've worn glasses for about six years now and had only the one set of frames, having had stronger lenses put in them once. I'm at the point now where I have to have my glasses on all the time or I get whoozy and start bumping into things.
Here are some things I learned (or re-learned) during my shopping trip for new specs:

• My current eyeglasses are way out of style, as most manufacturers don't even offer the shape of lens anymore. It's all about squatty rectangles now, apparently.
• Eyeglasses are expensive! Especially with prescription sunglasses, which were a splurge but are pretty awesome. I convinced myself that I need them because the sun is so bright here and I'm tired of having the clip-on old man look going.
• All glasses make me look older. Darn you, eye allergies! If only I could wear contacts ... I could turn back time at least five years, if not more.
• I had to try on about 30 pairs before I found frames I could live with.
• If someone will pay for my laser eye surgery, I'll gladly do it tomorrow.
• Glasses take some time to get at some stores. I was hoping for a couple of days, considering some places can get them to you "in about an hour." Sheesh! It could be next week before my vision improves.
• Being near-sighted and having astigmatism really stinks.
• This is one part about getting old that I'm not really enjoying.
• I'd like to have a job that doesn't require turning on a computer every day.
• Sometimes change is good.
• Seven days is a long time to wait for new glasses.
• I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, but it just looks like a blurry little dot.
Once I get my new glasses, I'll illustrate with pictures what some of this means. Until next time, see ya (apologies for my squinting).

DUDE! If I'd known you were about to buy glasses, I would have told you about zinnioptical.com . . . they have super-super cheap prices. I mean, like, the kind of prices that make you do a double-and-triple take!
Whoops! I meant zennioptical.com (mis-spell!).
In any case, you may NOT want to go take a look after all, because it might just make you angry about the expensiveness of optical shops.
So just forget I said anything, ok?
"squatty rectangles" Tell me about it. I haven't changed frames in several years either and dread having to get used to my no line bifocals in the current postage-stamp sized lenses. The sweet spot for any given distance will be about the size of the punctuation at the end of this sentence. I'll look like a bobble head doll!
somehow i have managed to make it to the ripe old age of 43 without the use of spectacles;however, lately, I've begun noticing that I have to tip my head back a bit to read the labels on medicine and such. i am not looking forward to the whole process of getting specs, and especially not the trying on 300 pair to find a frame that suits me, which inevitably will be on the 400-dollar rack.
did you go with squatty rectangles? they are, indeed, all the rage and will make you very trendy :-)
Ahhh yes, I hate having to wear glasses but when I hit 40... I seem to always manage to scratch my lenses and spend the rest of the year or so wondering why everything is not sharply focused. Even now, the pair I just got from Sam's, is scratched.
