In the wee hours of September 3, 1973, my mom was watching Jerry Lewis and his telethon on TV and feeling a little weird. By that afternoon, I'd made my parents, uh, parents and was on my way to becoming me. There are some cool things about being born on Labor Day:
• Every so often my birthday falls on Labor Day again, like it does this year. When it doesn't, there's usually a three-day weekend lurking somewhere nearby.
• It's still summer, but not as hot as late July or August.
• Relating to the second point, in most photos of my birthday or its related parties, I am tanned and relaxed - the state in which I reside during the hotter months.
Then, there are some things that aren't so good:
• I was among the youngest in my school classes. This only became a real bummer when my friends had already turned 16 and were driving up and down the sidewalk like big people. Me? I got to either walk to school or my mommy would drop me off. Totally. Uncool. (Sidenote good thing: Someday they'll all turn 90 and I'll still be 89! Ha ha, suckers!).
• School was always around the corner. Not quite the gift I was hoping for.
• Can't wear my kickin' white shoes (or matching white belt) after my birthday.
The watch pictured above was a birthday gift the year I turned 30. For those counting, that was four years ago. But at least my former high school classmates are already 34! Suckers!

my, but you're just a pup :-) Happy Birthday (in 2 days)
it's birthday season here, as well. the mr. on August 23, the Junior on the 25th, the Boy on Sept 6, the Longhorn on the 8th, and the College Freshman on the 9th.
we get really tired of cake.
When I was a teenager, I'd stay up all night watching the J.L. telethon over Labor Day, just to stay up all night.
I don't do that anymore.
Saw your comment on Leah's posting about your Mom and her interesting accent. In an old PBS series, "The Story of English," one of the episodes highlights the VA islands in the Chesapeake and their very interesting speech patterns. I think you would really enjoy getting hold of this series.
Happy 34th Birthday! And, congrats on the 100-mile bike ride. -- Ted = Dad of Leah (agirlandaboy)
Happy Birthday! And a happy year to follow.
