Thinking small

| | Comments (9)

As part of the room shuffle in our house, we have moved our desktop computer into our bedroom so that the former home office can become a guest room (and the former guest room will become the baby's room). This situation isn't ideal, but I've long been a proponent of making every room in our house do double if not triple duty. Who needs a big house when you've got a little one that's versatile and thoughtfully put into play?

For example, if we have a lot of people over at one time, we can fill the bathtub full of ice and use it to keep drinks cold. And, you guessed it! The toilet can provide extra seating. I wonder why it's so hard to get party guests over here?

Anyway, the computer's migration means we have to use a smaller desk. This is actually the one my mom used as a kid. The stool to the right (now in use as a rather scary printer stand) is a leather-topped oak barstool my dad found on a curb. Our "desk chair" is a vintage pub seat we bought at an antique store during a weekend trip to east Texas. Our abbreviated workstation is still a work in progress, but it's an example of why sometimes size doesn't matter.

Have you shrunk anything lately?

Love it! I also am of the attitude that one can live in a small house and have it be totally functional . . . when Hub and I were looking at houses last year, I was absolutely amazed at what was actually considered "small" . . . anything under 2000 sq feet was described as such to me! Consider that our parents and grandparents lived and raised families in half that space, and it kind of boggles my mind.

So yeah, we bought a "small" house, and I am constantly weeding through clothes and such and donating what we don't use so that we don't die by being smothered by an avalanche of stuff. It's great -- not as much to clean, no knicky-nacks, etc.

A pioano. Go figure.

Very nice. And I think your desk looks just like one that's at my parent's house.

If you weren't in Texas, I'd call your move a bit of Yankee ingenuity.

I'm trying to do the exact same thing. Our office is becoming a baby's room and our guest room is becoming a guest room/ office. But now my husband is getting nervous about having the computer in the guest room (baby = LOTS of extended stay vistors!) so we may end up doing the bedroom/ computer thing too....or maybe just get a lap top. Oh this is too complicated! All for a critter that will weigh 7-8 pounds when it comes home!

i really like using all the space in a house. people can work in a dining room, kitchen, bedroom and living room. and i have used a tub before for ice and drinks. it works nicely since it is the one place that is least likely to be used during a party.

Hey, there's space enough for a "post-it".

I shrunk my purse. I was guilty of carrying the "big bag"...

I took it down a notch...

Less is more. ;)

I am of the same attitude. We are still in our "starter house." Our challenge is trying not to accumulate too much STUFF. I periodically go through the house and fill boxes for the Salvation Army.

That computer is PRETTY!
