Biking in the rain

| | Comments (9)

It started to sprinkle here a bit this morning, but that didn't stop me when I was ready to get out and exercise a little. The raindrops were happy, fluffy ones, and there was no lightning in sight or thunder in earshot. So I decided to hop on my bicycle.

I've been using a helmet for only about a year, despite having biked most of my life. I was reluctant to do it, but now my noggin feels nekkid without one. If I'm riding on a paved city trail I might still forgo it, but gimme streets and I'm strapping on the brain bucket. First time I've ridden in the rain with it, and the tap-tap-tap was soothing. Water that got through the air vents trickled and tickled, but it was all good.

For those of you with dialup Internet, you may want to stop now. Everyone else, you are welcome to tag along on my brief journey ...

Riding a bicycle in the rain takes some extra care. You can't just pedal your legs off and expect the tires to stick to a wet road. Several years back I took a ride after a rainshower and found out the hard way that oil spots can make you fold like a FEMA tent in a stiff breeze.

I really need to get some new tires anyhow. Most of my riding is on paved roads. Using these off-road tires creates drag and makes a gentle hum as I glide along. I want "urban" or "commuter" tires, which may drop the cool factor on my 10-year-old bike a bit, but after all, it's a 10-year-old bike. Might as well make it more useful. Wish I had disc brakes, more sure in the wet, but it's not worth upgrading until I buy an entirely new ride.

Didn't ride far this morning, coupla miles or so. Rode down a big hill and then back up another big hill. These aren't mountains I'm talking about, but the slow, steep grades give me a wheeeeeeeeeee feeling on the way down and a grinding, get-a-good-workout feeling on the way up. Having multiple gears helps.

I remember in college I was out riding around one weekend and one of my pedals actually fell off. That was on another bike, one I got mainly to get me through college. The bike I have now was one I bought after graduation, an upgrade after four years (OK, four and 1/2) of hard drinking. I mean, hard work. These pedals are upgrades from the ones the bike came with. The Petite Filet bought them for me as a Christmas gift while we were dating. Like our marriage, there's been some wear and tear, but they're still in good shape.

This is a cheap department-store taillight that blinks when I turn it on. If I ever get back into commuting by bike I'll need to invest in a real set of headlights and a powerful taillight. Met a guy last month who has rigged a 12-volt system on his bike to power motorcycle lights so he can be seen during his 37-mile (one way) rides to work. That is dedication!

My ride today was sort of like going to the beach. It wasn't nearly as fun as frolicking in the waves, laying on a towel and hearing the surf crush the shoreline, building a sandcastle, etc. But the journey home was much like after having a fun day at the beach. You don't really want it all to end, but you've got sand in all manner of places (or, water soaking into your clothes) and you know it's time to stop.

But I hope it won't be the last time. And now I'd really like to go to the beach.

End note: The Word of the Day is "bloggygagging." It is blogging while you should really be doing something else. Now, what's the word for blogging when it is the only thing you're supposed to be doing?

i don't like doing anything in the rain since i last walked to work in the rain and my feet turned pink... i was wearing red shoes.

Oh, that's a HELMET. I was wondering why you were posting a picture of Alien.

I have a hybrid bike that's oh, about 9 years ago. I've never figured out the gear system (1,2 and 3 on the left and 1-7 on the right, and combos of the two that don't seem to progress in any logical order (you don't go from a 2-7 to a 3-1 unless you want the chain to just fall off). Anywho, it doesn't seem to go very fast, either. Those knobby tires are good for off-roading but on the pavement they make ya work harder! I'm going to get my bike out and head to the library tomorrow. You've inspired me!

Hey, T-Bone, "bloggygagging" is great!

Hey!
Love your bike story! I got a bike after I graduated too... but haven't used it much since I moved to a more citylike area. I miss it. Wicked good exercise too!
PS-thanks for stopping by my blog and saying hi:)

Bloggygagging? I guess that would only NOT apply if you wrote blog entries for a living! =)

Biking in light rain is so nice. Makes me want to dig out the 10-speed and take a ride!

You're right- city life should = good biking.... however, considering that I'm in Mass and many of the people on the road here SUCK, I've given it a break and taken up more trails instead.

I LOVE riding my bike! But only when the sun is shining :)
