The Lone Arranger

We've been rearranging various rooms of our house lately, kind of a budget self-Trading Spaces type of thing. Our kitchen is revamped (thanks to that Ikea cabinet purchase), the Cutlet's room is renewed (he told us he didn't like his room anymore, but now he loves it), we moved our bedroom around (and now the computer fits in there) and more is on the way. Our former home office will become the guest room, our former guest room will eventually house Tater Tot No. 2 and I'm continuing to make our upstairs room a playroom. After a garage sale (I hate garage sales), we'll be able to park a second car in the garage (after we replace our truck, of course).

With a wife who's 5 months pregnant, it also means I'm the one doing the heavy lifting. Our wood floors make the sliding fairly easy, though. It's also my pregnant wife who is also sick of the 30 100-degree days (that's an accurate number, people) this summer. It's not typical for us to be that hot for that freakin' long.

So she says something about wanting to move to someplace that has seasons. That could happen someday, but I'll be taking her to a cold spot in the dead of winter to see how she really likes it. She grew up in Oklahoma, lived in Arkansas briefly and has been in Texas ever since. The girl doesn't know what winter is. For those of you who have the pleasure of cooler temps, and actual seasons, help me by telling me what it's really like. I lived in Virginia for 10 years; I know winter but it's been more than 20 years since I lived it.

Which would you have, oppressive heat or oppresive cold, and why?

Eeek....that's too hard. Neither, I like my seasons.

T-Bone, I feel like we're leading parallel lives, we're also spending all of our time reorganizing and rearranging (and this usually involves a trip to IKEA!)

I grew up in Illinois and now live in Eastern PA. I've always known four seasons and I wouldn't have it any other way. I don't particularly like the bitter cold that I knew in Northern IL, so I'd prefer a hot day or two over that long-lasting icy nonsense, but some snow and some heat are a good balance to me. There is something about having winter that makes Spring that much more appreciated.

For the most I am an indoor person so given those 2 choices I would go with the cold, but then I would be giving up enjoying motorcycle riding and girl's in bikinis. tough choice. how about 75-80 degrees year round.

I'll take the oppressive heat any day over cold. I don't have a specific reason why- I guess I just like runnng around in my flip flops, hanging by the pool, and drinking margaritas rather than lacing up the snow boots, shoveling the driveway, and huddling under layers of blankets trying to find warmth. I'm it's starting to cool down here in Upstate NY already- after having temps last week in the upper 90's, yesterday morning it was 47. in august. oi...
so if you guys ever feel like experiencing an upstate NY winter- come on up. My door's always open!

I vote oppressive heat all the way! I love the sunshine. I love to wear tank tops and work on a tan. I never seem to feel as hot as the person beside me feels. The heat doesn't bother me. I need blankets and ear muffs when October hits, though. I HATE BEING COLD!

However, in general...there is nothing like a great season change. I really love the fall and I like a snow every now and again...there is always something to look forward to!

As to preferences, in the summer I vote "oppressive cold", in the winter, I vote "oppressive heat".

It's a women's prerogative, doncha know.

"WOMAN'S" PREROGATIVE, NOT WOMEN'S ...

I am forever messin' up a punchline...

I've found that it's okay to have only one season if that one season means it's 60-70 degrees all year.

That said, you can always put more clothes on in the cold, but you can't crawl out of your skin in the heat.

OK, you know me and know that I'm a Texan through and through. Frankly, the cold weather was one of the reasons I DIDN'T want to move to the DC area. But it's really not as bad as I thought it would be. I quickly learned that layers are key and LL Bean rocks. And it's kind of nice to have a cold Christmas.

That said, I'd still take the Texas climate over the DC climate for one reason only ... the humidity here is completely disgusting during the summer! Give me the 100-degree Texas summers over the stifling DC summers any day!

As one who lives in Jamaica where it is summer 24/7 (with minor changes in temperature in the cooler months of the year), I say give me warm over cold any day. But 100 degrees is way out of line!

I'd hate not to have the change of seasons and the delightful changes in temps that go with them. Spent the first (gawd...is it really...) fourth of my life in upstate New York and am now in northern Kentucky. Love snow. Kentucky doesn't get nearly enough of it for me. Oppressive heat or oppressive cold. No contest, I'll take the cold. Sorry. I guess I won't be much help in convincing P.F.

Good luck, though!

Seasons are so great. And it's more than just temperature.

What would I do without the crisp cool days of fall? The leaves changing and drifting down and crunching underfoot? A horse ride in long jeans and flannel? The joy and surprise of the first few snowflakes? The huddling by the fire with hot cider as Christmas lights twinkle? The comfort of a warm home during the darkest cold and gray? The giving way of ice to tender green shoots and buds? The amazement of color after the bleak months? The drip of sweat while sitting in the sun and the refreshing chill of ice cold beer? The shock of air conditioning in a cool house on a hot day? The ability to grow my own tomatoes and eat them right out of the garden? The gradual return of the cooler days in fall?

I can't choose. I love my seasons. Always have. No place like Indiana.
