Max makes a statement on the airline industry

When the Petite Filet took a trip a few weeks ago, she picked up a little trinket during a layover at the airport (Chicago Midway) for the Cutlet. Being a boy, he absolutely loved it.

If you pay attention to the airline industry, particularly in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, you know of the Wright Amendment, federal legislation that limits the destinations to which Southwest Airlines can fly from Love Field in Dallas. The measure was meant to help the then-upstart DFW International Airport grow and thrive, which it has. As the main airport for American Airlines (headquartered nearby), much of the region's development and population owes itself to the bigger airport.

We typically drive the extra distance to fly Southwest out of Love because it's cheaper. We wish Southwest was allowed to fly anywhere it wanted to from Love, but the Wright Amendment says it can't. For us, the Wright Amendment has run its course and should be killed. The Metroplex is now large enough to support two major airports. Period.

Well, back to the trinket. Max – wonderful dog he is – still has some puppy behaviors that need to be curbed. He also apparently does not share my thoughts on the Wright Amendment.

Wright Amendment is bad. Should be removed. Less than a year ago I flew to K.C. for $900. Today we have guys flying there for $175 thanks to the removal of the Wright Amendment to K.C.

Kudos to you for trekking the extra distance to fly Southwest! I hope the Wright Amendment goes down in flames, and soon . . . for exactly the same reasons you cite!

I also think it's pretty significant that despite the Wright Amendment, Southwest continues to be the only airline to show a profit in recent years. This also has to be due in part to what a wonderful company it is from a "people" standpoint as well. To wit: my uncle worked for SW for years (working his way up from ramp crew to gate agent), but when he was diagnosed with Hodgkins he was still multiple years short of the tenure needed to retire . . . his local headquarters got together and petitioned the company to somehow find a way, and it worked! His coworkers "donated" years before retirement (delaying their own retirement by however long they wanted)so that he could stop working, get a bone marrow transplant, and retain his health and flight benefits.

Show me another airline that would do something like that. Just sayin'.

Hi, very interesting site
