OK, Ye Internet People with Laptop Computers, I want to know about them.
As I may have mentioned before, our family is going to get bigger late this year. That means our house is going to get smaller. So we need a plan.
We're talking multi-purpose rooms throughout the house to maximize the space and ensure every square foot is doing at least double duty. We will have to do quite a purging of stuff to make our plan work. That may include (say it isn't so!) eventually ditching the desktop computer and its space-sucking desk and investing in laptops with a wireless router for Internet neatly tucked inside a small antique cabinet.
• So, if you've got a laptop, what kind is it (bonus points if it's an Apple)?
• What do you love about it?
• What have been some of its limitations?
• What do you use it for?
• How often do you use it?
• If you take it with you, what do you carry it in?
• Do you have a traditional desktop workstation or do you go a la wireless throughout your abode?
• How long have you had it?
• Do you have/or miss your desktop computer?
Prying questions, yes, but I know how wonderful, intelligent and giving you Internet People can be. I have also heard you have a wonderful singing voice, and I don't believe what others say about your odor.
So, help? Please?

Um..okay, no pressure or anything here but...
I have a Dell laptop.
I love that it works.
We had to buy a little fan thing that it sits on because it constantly overheated and shut down for awhile. That's kinda a pain.
I use it for email, internet mainly. My son uses it for games.
I use it Every.Single.Day.
I carry it in a totally awesome leather handbag that I bought. (a girl thing)
I go wireless throughout the home. the laptop normally resides on the coffee table.
I have had it for about 3 years.
No, I would hate to go back to a desktop setup. I can't stand sitting in an office chair to be on the computer. I like having my computer in the kitchen, on the couch, in bed...wait, it's no wonder I don't date, isn't it?
I have an iBook (the small one, 12" I think); I've had it just over a year, I think. I absolutely love it -- it is light, easy to carry in a small laptop bag, and the battery stays charged for about 3.5 hours. I use it mainly for internet (email, blogging, surfing), but I also use it for writing and household budget, etc. The keyboard isn't too small for me, but I have little girly hands, so YMMV. I also find that I have to hook up a mouse to it because I don't really like the trackpad thingy -- the only downside to this is that the firewire and USB ports are on the left side instead of the right (not a problem if you're a lefty or use a wireless mouse).
If I were to use it for work on a regular basis, I would have gotten the 14" size, but since I use it for exclusively non-work purposes, it fits me just fine!
Get thee to the apple store and PLAY!
I forgot to add that yeah, I use a wireless router. Hubbo has a desktop (eMac), but I rarely ever use it at all.
I have a mac mini. I use it at a desktop with a flat panel. I use a iogear switch to use the same printer, montior, keyboard, mouse with my IBM laptop. I use the mini for all personal activities including photoediting, music hosting, word processing, email and minimal design work.
My laptop is for all things work related. It is a Thinkpad t42, they recently sent it to me to replace my older laptop. It's a workhorse. I use it everyday. I used to have a Dell and it was great too, until I pulled the screen apart from the body--but that was after having it 3 years.
I'd like a mac laptop, but can't afford the investment right now. I'm considering instead getting more space as a stackable unit for my mini. I have 80 now, I want 150 (I do a lot of high-res photo editing).
I like my work laptop, but it's a pc. I've never had a mac laptop--but I lust after them constantly.
We have 2. Powerbook and IBook. Airport and Airport Express. Usually sit together in living room, but can go to back yard or anywhere and do our things! We love them and take along when we go out of town. Would never go back to desktop! Never! Go for it.
Citrus.
I too have a Dell laptop which I love, as do all my children and my husband. Its connected wirelessly to our home network via a Netgear Rangemax wireless router which is awesome. I purchased a HP desktop computer to replace one of the kids' old computers and figured I'd get my laptop back. It didn't work. I'm constantly going from room to room to garage (hubbie)searching for who is using my laptop! Last night, I found my daughter laying on her bedroom floor with her feet propped up on the tower of HER COMPUTER using MY LAPTOP. The laptop was two years old in Feb. and we have nothing but good things to say about it and Dell. Good luck with your shopping!
I'm getting to plunge into the MacIntosh world, and haven't been able to decide on the desktop or laptop. I still haven't decided, but your commenters shed some new light on laptops.
Thanks,
And have a great weekend.

I've got the 12" iBook, 4 years old, the only problem with it was that when the battery went bad, it locked up the cpu. New battery, no more problems. For some reason, the Apple screens display text better to my eyes. I find it easier to read my little laptop than my PC at work with a big graphics monitor. It might be Windows related. With computers becoming more similar in performance, it seems that there is still a big difference in screens- which can only be appreciated by extensive use. I've seen many laptops that put a hurt on my eyes (HP)
I have a Falcon Northwest Fragbook, polished orange. What I love about it is the nuclear power, weight, short battery life, and Discover Card credit line.
1.laptop: yes it's Toshiba, though it's not first choice.
2. though, not first choice, I DO love it. It's built in wireless, mutli media center (which is great for radio stuff I do with it, but more later)
3. limitations? none that are huge.
4.use for DVD playing and recording, also a work write off
5. Use it everyday, wouldn't live without it now.
6.I carry it in a stylish red carry on, one that matches cell phone, purse, and planner, though it's my obseviness, not something I would suggest
7. I plug her in at the office, though we have wireless, for the purpose of speed, working on wireless at home
8. had this one for about 2 months
9. never had a desktop
An HP Pavillion. It's a bit heavy, but the screen is large and clear, the sound is great, and it doesn't run as hot as many do. I have a neat little rolling bag bought at Kohl's that has a special spot for it and holds what the usual carry on does. Wireless so it goes wherever I do, even outside on a nice spring evening. I feel so spoiled.
Good design!
