After a night's stay at a certain chain motel in Corpus Christi last weekend, I slammed them a little too hard in this space for failing to bring us extra wash cloths in a timely manner. It took two hours to get them, and they arrived as we were leaving.
Well, the motel – a La Quinta, which is Spanish for The Quinta – sent me a request to fill out a survey via e-mail. I did and was quite candid about my disappointment in the late-arriving bathroom linens. On Thursday, while I was picking up our new kitchen table, the manager of The Quinta left a sincerely apologetic phone message about the wash cloths. She said the motel had been shorted them and she had even considered going to Wal-Mart to buy extras. Because of our inconvenience, she refunded our money for the night.
That, friends, is customer service. And it has restored our faith in The Quinta.
This weekend, we marked our 7th wedding anniversary at The Omni Mandalay Hotel on the Mandalay Canal in Las Colinas (Spanish for The Colinas). What? Never heard of the Mandalay Canal – even if you've lived in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex for years? I'm not suprised. It seems like a well-kept secret.
The place was awesome. World-class service, luxury accommodations, $30 breakfasts and a beautiful setting that belied its urban surroundings. The canal is part of a master-planned community that brings an Old World aesthetic to residences, retail and corporate campuses. Sheesh, I sound like a Chamber of Commerce brochure. We were on the 22nd floor overlooking Lake Caroline. There were even Venetian gondolas polling the canal. If it weren't for some thin finances during the weekend, me and my honey would have glided along in such waterborne transport.
The Petite Filet's mom came down to stay with the Cutlet the night we were gone. She was excited that we are expecting our second wee one, our very own Riblet or Riblette. Shhhhh, it's still a secret.
To close, two quick stories about the Omni Mandalay. First, we were riding the elevator back to our room after a pleasant evening stroll along the canal on Friday night. We shared the 'vator with a dude and two friends/siblings. He was carrying a tall stack of towels and kept practicing how he was going to hide his face.
"Where's the ring?" his female comrade inquired.
"In my pocket," the towel-bearer replied. "I don't know if I should have worn such nice pants and shoes. They'll give me away."
"No, it only has to work for a few seconds," the other male member of the party chimed in.
We wished the towel-bearer the best of luck as he nervously waited to rise above our floor to make a surprise appearance and ask his girlfriend for her hand in marriage.
The second story is while we were driving from the parking lot after checkout, I pointed out an older gentleman ... balding ... pale ... wearing shorts he had no business wearing. Running-style shorts that gave a preview of where the sun doesn't normally shine. And a white T-shirt bearing a Texas flag. As we got closer and made a right turn out of the lot, he was crossing the street – assumably to the hotel. Then we recognized him ... U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-Texas). We both resisted the urge to shout, "Yo, Senator! Nice legs!"
Hahahaha, that's funny. My sister often sees political figures au natural in DC.

We had complaints about a Resort - on our 3rd annual visit - about the service. One of their credo points was that they answered every complaint. They never did, and we never went back. For $300+ a day, you should have great service.
