Image borrowed from the Missour School for the Deaf, mainly because it shows a so-retro-it's-ugly-but-cool microwave.
We bought a microwave this past weekend, which doesn't seem that significant until I tell you I had never bought a microwave before. I had a microwave, but the 12-year-old model was bought for me by my parents before I headed off to college. It was a nice Panasonic, and its little screen said, "Enjoy your meal" as it beeped in readiness. Of course, I might have been just boiling some water, but what did it know?
Well, the thing started shooting out sparks and was getting smoky on the inside (beyond what the coating of food bits normally created). We figured it was better to just buy a new one before we burned the house down.
We went to this store you may never have heard of to peruse their quality (but limited) selection of 'waves. We kind of wanted one fronted by stainless steel, because nothing says "I know how to cook" like stainless steel. I chose the one with the largest interior and the most power, which added $30 to the cost of the adequate one. It's now sitting on top of refrigerator, because our 1964 house wasn't built with a microwave in mind (or having a lot of usable counter space).
It does have more power, because I quite easily burned a few strips of bacon this morning. With the old microwave, it took a lot more effort to scorch anything.

OMG! that LITERALLY lokos like my microwave. I think it was put in when the house was built in 1979. My nephew calls it "the brady bunch" microwave. Its old, but it works.
pretty much.
That is so funny....I had the EXACT same thing happen to my 'college' microwave about 3 weeks ago (sparks and all!!!), went to Target and bought a new one. Weird! You must have started college the same year as me (1992??)
Have you been shocked at how much faster your food cooks? I have burned everything I've put in the microwave. I can't get used to all these watts!
I love new microwaves. We got one when we redid our kitchen the summer before last. It's a stainless steel one that goes over the stove (our last one was a tiny white counter model).
We got a great deal at a scratch and dent place. It's normally a $700 microwave that we got for $300 (they had mismarked it, but gave me the price anyway). It actually works as an oven too, where you can speedcook foods. I can cook a meatloaf in 25 minutes that tastes fresh from the oven. It's awesome!
Best of luck with your new microwave. Ours still works, but doesn't tell time any more. It's been that way for about 4 years, and imagine that one of these days we'll be making the same purchase.

Must be a 'wave virus goin' round. Ours started doing the fourth of July thing about a month ago and we purchased a nice Panasonic one - stainless steel, of course!
until now, i had no idea you could BURN stuff in the microwave!!!
i gotta get a new one! :-)
you make everything interesting!
