Lofty goals

We are in the middle of converting our over-the-garage "loft" room into a playroom for the Cutlet. Well, and it'll be a playroom for us, too, eventually. I'm painting the walls and ceiling blue (with one wall a darker blue), installing a new light fixture, adding some toy storage, etc. The theme we originally came up with was to build an indoor treehouse. However, it didn't take long to realize that our boy is car crazy. Really, he's nuts about anything with wheels. So we're going with a transportation/garage motif.

The photo below illustrates why we need a new light fixture up there.

If it's original to the house, that means it's a 1964 model. Tastes have changed over the years, because I can't imagine liking this fixture when it was brand new. It was designed with ugly all over it. Even if a beholder finds it beautiful, when on the room actually gets darker. I might try to sell it on e-Bay, however, because I'm under the impression that people will buy anything with a price tag attached. If I say it used to belong to someone famous, or some religious icon emerges from the finish, we could trade it for the college education of the Cutlet's choice.

More aptly, I will probably curb it and let the Garbage Gypsies have it if they want.

The room's other claim-to-fame, which, if we live here long enough will also be curb fodder, is its flooring ...

Low-pile carpet that looks like wood planks, complete with nailheads. Who knew? This may not be original to the house because I've found remnants of green shag along the tack strips. We're going to keep it for the conversational value, it's easy cleanability and the fact that sometime I bet one of the Cutlet's friends is going to drink too much Kool-Aid, run in circles and yak all over it. Won't be so bad if it's this gross carpet that bears the brunt. Seriously, if it had not been the Place Where Dogs Crap or be so lumpy (the pad beneath it is long since turned to dust), we'd keep it indefinitely.

I've mentioned this before, but who remebers this type of post?, but we're nearing our goal of painting the entire house anything but white. The home office (where I am now) and the guest bedroom are the only remnants of white. Our kitchen is yellow, our living room ceiling is green, our bedroom is lavender (don't ask), the Cutlet's room is orange, brown and bleached wheat, the hallway is a deep tan and our front door is red. We are anything but afraid of color. I don't want to ever be lumped in with those people who think off-white is a worthwhile paint choice.

Back to it. The Petite Filet is out shopping with a Christmas gift card, the Cutlet is blissfully taking a nap, and I've got to wire the new light upstairs. I was so glad that in taking out the old one there was a junction box. The last light I replaced was held onto the ceiling by a four-inch scrap of quarter-round moulding and a drywall screw. Sheesh.

Hey, our hallway is deep tan and our front door deep red!

But my bedroom will never be lavendar.

That carpet is awesome!!! Maybe you can cut it into strips and apply it to your car for that stylish 'simulated wood grain' look!

Put the light fixture on ebay. Say that it is HAUNTED. It will sell for more than an ordinary ugly light.

Hmm..if you flip it upside-down, it looks like a kerosene lamp from the 1800s. Vintage!

Awww,, you should keep the original. Cutlet won't know! It's the toys he's interested in!
