I had a delicious breakfast of "homemade" chicken biscuits this morning. The biscuits were some of those Pillsbury ready-to-bake frozen ones, and the chicken was left over from a steakhouse kids' meal that the Cutlet didn't touch. Lest you believe I'm stealing food from my son's mouth, lemme tell you he has some other leftover chicken in there he needs to eat.
What's a chicken biscuit? Aha! The answer is in the question, although it may also include butter, jelly or some other sauce. For those on the go, I highly recommend Chick-Fil-A's chicken biscuits. There are a few McDonald's around here that also sell them in the morning, but I haven't tried them.
I didn't grow up with chicken biscuits, though. As for the southern cooking that raised me, I can point to fried corn bread, North Carolina-style pulled pork barbecue with vinegar-based sauce and "greens," which could include all sorts of things depending on my grandmother's mood. My other granny lived on an island, so I grew up around steamed oysters, broiled fish, crab legs and boiled shrimp. I come from a strong foundation of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
Tell me about some of the things you like to eat, even if they aren't special to your region. Maybe it's time for another "Dinner Project."

i think it's time for a breakfast project. i'll admit ignorance (blissful ignorance, at that) in the chicken-fried and biscuit department. i mean, i like a good biscuit, but... i dunno. i'm too canadian at heart, i guess.
what i love, however, is the plate the chicken biscuits are on. mad love.
p.s. thx for the email. cars just suck me dry of energy and money. never ending battle.
Where are the grits?
Mmmm biscuits. At my grandma's house they were accompanied by ham or more often bacon home cured and sliced by hand into thick slices fried and then the drippings made into gravy. A big glass of orange juice then a bowl of oatmeal with cream and slices of toast with home churned butter. You'd think my granddad would have weighed 300 pounds but getting up at 5 and feeding stock and milking a cow before breakfast seems to make a difference. My standard breakfast is hot tea and oatmeal with skim milk but the only 'stock' I feed before it is three cats ;)
T-bone:
Sounds interesting. Jelly on a chicken biscuit is just as weird as maple syrup on bacon, one of my favorites.
There's one thing I haven't tried: Chicken and Waffles. I think it's an old soul food favorite.
One cuisine habit of my parents' when I was growing up was crumbled up leftover cornbread in a glass of buttermilk or sweet milk. I never cared for it myself.
How long has it been since I heard someone call homogenized milk, "sweet milk".
A long time.
Ah, there's nothing like down-home southern cooking. My grandma made homemade biscuits from scratch, pounding out the dough until it melted in your mouth when you ate them. With thick sausage gravy, and fried potatoes. Not a better breakfast out there! And I miss real pulled-pork BBQ sandwiches. Out here in California, with the health-conscious cuisine, you just don't get the good stuff!
I miss Chick-FIL-A!!! Love some chichen biscuits!! Thanks for a post that made me think about home, and my grandma too.
I love North Carolina style bbq - pulled pork, with coleslaw. Yummy!
I've got to agree with Sassy - I think you should do a Breakfast Project. Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day. I've got a waffle recipe to die for - they're called "Waffles of Insane Greatness".
Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches! Gosh I miss those... I think there was a period of time when I was a kid that I actually hated them, but nowadays I crave them (bad) from time to time.
One of my favorite foods (and there are many) - Chinese "oily sticks"... how do I describe them... kinda like doughnuts deep fried but not sweet and longish rather than round. Usually served with soy milk and some kind of chinese pastry (usually salty, but can be sweet)
What else? Guacamole, Pico de gallo... YUM. That's from living almost 10 years in Texas :)
I'll never forget my dad making "blood pudding" when I was a kid. It's not a breakfast food (in fact I'd argue whether it's a food at all), but it's really made of sheep's blood, eggs and some other smelly stuff. It got to the point where my mom and I outvoted him and banned him from making it at our house. It's a Portuguese specialty, so go make it in Portugal, you know?
I love chicken biscuits. Never did make them at home, though. Maybe I should try it. We eat lots of chicken.
Have a good day.
