The Cutlet's first dentist visit was this morning, and it went as well as could be expected when the object of the appointment is 2 years old. He's got nearly all his teeth – and no cavities – with the last two of his 20 on their way in now. The office was nice (there was even an indoor castle for the kids – and uh, some adults – to climb in) and overall the experience wasn't so bad. They had the best magazine selection I'd ever seen outside of a bookstore or library; most were but a month old and included mags on cars and cameras. What's not to like about that?
While we were waiting, a woman was gabbing on her cell phone about her experiences when her appendix was removed. Me and the Petite Filet wondered who on earth she was telling this to, with horrid details like having to drink some red stuff and ending up yakking it into a trash can. She said she wanted her husband to have his appendix removed voluntarily, because he often flies across the big pond and my oh my how awful it would be if it burst mid-flight. Then she said over the phone that President Eisenhower had his appendix removed before the Battle of Normandy for the same reason. I'm not sure that would be on my list of to-dos before launching a military attack, but maybe it's just me.
Like adult medical appointments, ones for kids make time stand still. Or rather, it makes you sit still while you're waiting for your turn and the universe whooshes around you. Mainly it's the part after your name is called (in this case, they said "Cutlet?") and you're moved to an undisclosed secure location within the inner sanctum of the office. There's a window, but the cool magazines are gone and you can't hear anyone talking about gross things on a cell phone anymore. When you've got a sleepy 2-year-old, the only occupation of time involves making sure he doesn't break anything while you're waiting.
Kind of reminds me of dialup Internet, of which we have at home. Here we have a modern, rather fast computer (Apple iMac G4) on just about the slowest online technology available. At least it's 56k, right? It's like owning a Ferrari and trying to get it to run on tap water. We use it for other functions, however, such as updating resumes, organizing our digital music collection and sending hate mail to the neighbors (scratch the last one; we're not like that at all). We don't want or need cable, so that nullifies cable-based digital subcriber lines. We also don't want to sign up for every phone service under the sun just to make high-speed Internet cost something in the vicinity of reasonable. We use our cell phones for long distance, for the sake of far-away Pete.
So, we "live" with slow Internet by doing other things while waiting for pages to creep along on our browser. Such as:
• Creating scrapbooks of our lives up to that point.
• Catching up on all our hand-written correspondence.
• Doing all the laundry.
• Cleaning the home office, or at least the desk, while we're waiting.
• Running a half-marathon (13 miles).
• Cooking a pot roast in the crock pot ... on the lowest setting.
• Mopping the entire house with a moist towelette.
• Watching the Cutlet get three inches taller.
• Washing and waxing both vehicles.
• Enjoying the changing of the seasons.*
• Planning a trip to Colorado this summer by studying every small road on the way.
• Finishing up a little bit of reading, such as "War and Peace."
• Completing a collection of short stories, having it published and seeing a preview of the upcoming film on TV.
• Growing a beard. Like the members of ZZ Top.
• Growing corn.
• Celebrating two birthdays.
You get the picture ... Any suggestions for reasonably priced, at least faster Internet service? Any advice is welcome.
*I guess that should be changing of the season from not-so-hot to hot. Forgot where I lived for a minute!
Have a good week, everybody! I'm not posting as often because I don't want to; I just don't want Big Brother to watch me do it.

Can't help you with the internet slow down. Don is in the tv business, so we already had cable.
I think the woman on the cell phone would be an object of my ire. What an awful thing to do with children listening.
Hahaha, mopping the entire house with a moist towelette - now there's a thought that makes me giggle!
I have DSL. I find that it's fast enough for my purposes (I've heard cable modem is faster, but much more expensive, and DSL is fast enough for me). It costs me about $40 a month. Since that's about how much my phone bill was anyway, my phone bill is now about $80 a month for the long distance + the DSL. I've been really happy with it.
We do the cable/ internet thing. Don't ask me how paying too much a month for cable/ internet became a 'necessity' rather than a 'luxury' but somehow it has.
Why can't they just leave you in the regular waiting room rather than taking you to the teeny waiting room with the ONE issue of Golf Magazine and nothing else to read???
I've noticed that people like to get attention by talking, usually too loudly, on their cell phones. Good Lord! I think there's a lot of other things to be worried about than your appendix bursting on an international flight.
Then she said "Oh, put Dwight on! I haven't talked to him in ages!" And she winks at you, mouthing "Im talking to the president."
I still find it odd to hear a solitary person walking by just yaking away to an unseen listener into a tiny almost-hidden microphone. Can't help the first impression of someone needing a heaping dose of medication.
Cell phones are annoying but there's something about those Nextel walkie talkies that just bug the crap out of me.
Sorry, cable modem here. Cheaper than the blood pressure meds I'd need if I had anything slower.
We don't have cable TV either, but we DO use a cable modem for our Internet. You'd think we could plug in the TV and get cable programming, but we can't. So...we get fast Internet without the 400 useless channels of cable television.
