Foot snorkel

| | Comments (10)

I knew I wasn't the only one.

Genetics and maybe good blood circulation has made me warm-natured. Cold still affects me, but I tend to warm up quickly. This especially happens at night. When I'm under the covers and the cold-natured PF is trying to draw heat from me, she warms up but I just get hotter and a little uncomfortable. Rather than pull away, I employ a "foot snorkel."

Most of me will remain beneath the sheet and heavy quilt, but at least one foot will poke out to release some body heat. The PF thinks this is bizarro, at least until we were having lunch with a woman from her office and – unprompted – she described her sleep style and her use of the foot-snorkel technique (without calling it a foot snorkel, of course). Once I fall asleep, I usually put away the foot snorkel because my toes become cold. That's the point at which the PF says I steal all the sheets, but I don't know what she's talking about.

On a related note, we need new sleeping pillows but don't know what to look for. We both sleep in all sorts of positions (heh). Anybody got any suggestions? What should they be filled with? If not, do you have any sleep habits that some may consider strange?

I'm very warm-natured as well (Sidenote: I've been dubbed the Source of Global Warming), and I don't like to be touched when I'm trying to fall asleep. I don't do the foot-snorkel, but I will flip my pillow to cool off.

I'm a side-sleeper, and use two pillows, one firm one under my head, and a King size down pillow to "hug". I've named that pillow. :-)

I always go to sleep with one foot out, too. But like you, at some point in the night it goes back in the covers. Also, no matter how hot it is, I have to have covers to hold on to. My kids are the same way.

Finally! A forum for my sleep habits!

I like the foot snorkel too. But not quite as much as I like the term.

I sleep on one of those fancy memoryfoam pillows that has a dip for your neck. i like it ok.

PS: I also need covers no matter how hot it is, and I can't sleep totally naked or I have nightmares.

I love your vocabulary! It creates such great images. I run sort of on the cool side so I don't need a foot snorkel, but I don't think I could use that technique anyway for fear of creepy night critters.

My best friend always employs the foot snorkel, but she pokes both feet out. When we were young I thought it was odd, but now it's just normal.

I employ what is called the "foot-tuck," in which the comforter (no top sheet for me) is tucked securely under both feet so kittens cannot bite or stick her claws under the covers and snag on my toes. Even when the kitten isn't present, however, the foot tuck is a must-do. In hotel rooms, this involves destroying the hospital corners by ripping all of the bedding off. I used to foot snorkle, but that's a luxury I had to abandon.

I AM a furnace! Always have been, always will be... My resting body temp seems to be about 20 degrees above *normal*. The foor snorkel is a way of life.... My bedsharing partner is always cold, the damn southerner!
Which seems strange to me, isn't it the woman who is cold? But anyways, he will use a sheet, blanket, comforter, while I'm sweltering...
We usually wind up with him mummified and me completely bare of pajamas, or bedding... ;)
However, I have found ways to keep him warm -- requiring some level of activity...

Foot snorkel!! I love it! I wish Matt would use that...he just complains and pulls away...he says "you are like sleeping with a kicking oven!"

My dad does the foot snorkel thing, too. But he says it's force of habit from his college years when he had bad athlete's foot, and had to stick his feet out so as to immprove the air circulation that would dry the icky athlete's foot ointment he had to slather on them each night.

I too have employed the foot snorkel (BTW: I love the term!) many times! As has the hubby!

HE is also the blanket/sheet stealer! Although he too will deny it, even when confronted with evidence to the contrary. (IE: 3 feet of blanket on his side of the bed in the morning)

As for pillows. Because the Hubby has neck problems he HAS to have Extra Firm pillows. We don't have a preference what they are filled with as long as they are full enough to support his neck well (and are KING SIZED). I usually end up half hugging one, as I need to sleep in a semi-fetal position to be comfy. While the hubby needs to be lying on his back to keep from having too much neck pain the next day!
